At this point I think Colorado is about +$6.5M (didn't do the exact math) for next season. So if we give him $5M this season and take it out of next season - it doesn't hamstring the team next year.
I'm not hearing a lot of opposition. I think both Austin and Mr.Mike have been really solid additions to the league and my intent is just to make sure they have a chance to play the game and enjoy it.

If anyone does oppose please raise with me via PM or in this thread (would prefer this as I think we should talk openly about this stuff) by EOD tomorrow.

I think they should walk the Aisle of Shame first. Then give it to them.

Agreed.
Is reversing the trade an option though or were other moves made since?

It was a combination of 2 trades between Colorado & Florida made 2 months ago (involving players like Gaudreau, Strome, Larkin, Nelson) with plenty of trades made since based on the belief that the salary had been exchanged correctly and that we were rounding out our rosters with specific position players based on the players involved in the trades.
If they were trades that were just made recently with no subsequent moves then I would agree to just reverse the trades.
But again, I'm alright with whatever decision is made by the league, as I don't want other GMs to feel cheated in any way.

Perhaps part of the shame should be made by one GM (FLA and COL) on each trade where they screwed up so they indicate an understanding of the math

Honestly, I’m fine with them getting help and not considering it as a loan as well. A mistake that could have been made by any of us during our first year.

Trade 1 (July 3rd):
To Florida:
- Johnny Gaudreau
- Josh Manson
- $2.5M cap cheese (for 2021-22)
To Colorado:
- Ryan Strome
- 2022 NYI 1st
Trade 2 (July 22nd):
To Florida:
- Dylan Larkin
- $3M cap cheese (for 2021-22)
To Colorado:
- Brock Nelson
- 2022 top 25 1st
- 2022 2nd (COL)
- 2022 3rd
- $4.25M cap cheese (for 2022-23)
The mistake that we made was that we sent the cap cheese as conditions.

The payroll still becomes an issue though. Something more than sending 5M to fix the situation.
Colorado will end up having a ceiling of 98M and the max any other team can have is 93M. As a team with a 63M, that's huge. What effect will a team playing with a 5 million cap space advantage have? None? IDK (not taking the actual 5M, but the extra space roster wise of having a higher payroll ceiling)
Spitballing looking for solutions that don't have advantages
Option A
Another solution could be to extend the watchdog on the Avalanche for 30-40 more days once the season begins to get cap compliant. From now till then we are talking almost two months to shed the 5M.
Option B
A CPHL Collections fund, I'll send 1M (that's 20% of the way there with 1 team). We would only need 3.89M to go... and operators are standing by

Reversing the trade isn’t an option as then Florida would be short
But let’s keep the ideas coming!

Just to add to my post
28 teams x 175k = 4.9M. I know things are tight but we should be able to wrestle up a 175k each. I understand teams won’t like but
Other solution is 28 teams get 1.75 from league and send it to Colorado. Each team takes a cheese space hit only. Colorado won’t have a higher salary ceiling as it will eat up almost 5m of his cheese space . Every other team looses 175K cheese room only
Option C
Every team gets a television contract kickback of 5m for the year .

Even with this cap mess gong show, the new Avs guy is still a better GM than Pat ever was.

I laid out a couple of solutions... and option A is the best IMO
But why is this even an issue
He has till after preseason to get cap compliant, that's a long time. Previously teams had to make trades or waive players to get compliant. I understand it's an honest error but it's not like they accendently sent 10M, the cap send was on purpose. The only error was that he forgot about it. It's only 5 million, make the moves necessary and chalk it up as a learning experience. I really don't think this is a bailout situation. The league wouldn't bailout a new GM with Buff
My offer stands I have 1.86M cap space and send a 1M. I'm willing to donate over half my cap space to help the guy out. Hopefully, someone else chips in but he doesn't have a lot of cap to get compliant and he has plenty of time.
Just my opinion, won't make me a liked guy. But I have 1M to help

I think it makes sense that the Avs try to trade for as much cap as they can find, including as they have more cap for next year, so they can put some of that to work.

I've offered Austin what cap I can spare this season for the same amount of cap next season. It is certainly below market rate but I don't think this is a scenario to try and take advantage of. Hopefully some other GMs can find a few pennies here as well.

The team is also currently carrying 13 forwards so one of the sub 23 guys could be sent to the farm to clear about 750K-1M in space.
