There's surprises every year, but I don't recall Mews being rated lower than about the middle of the second round (I had him late first). One issue is that size has come back in fashion the last few drafts, with more players under six-feet tall being left on the board. With defensemen, players six-feet and under seem to be more scrutinized, with blueliners like Anthony Cristoforo and Frankie Marrelli going unselected, and Aron Kiviharju having to wait until the 4th-round to hear his name called (don't get me wrong, all three have flaws). There were others that were rated highly that were taken much later than expected, such as Tarin Smith (taken in the 3rd), Luca Marrelli (taken in the 3rd), and Colton Roberts (taken in the 5th). Marrelli currently has 40 pts in 30 games, Smith has 31 pts in 29 games, and Roberts has 16 in 26. In 2023, our own Hunter Brzustewicz had to wait until the 3rd round to be chosen, and we all know what happened in his D+1 year.
Mews was listed as being 6'0" at the time of the draft (he's often listed as 6'1" now), and as I observed in my pre-draft write-up, he was more often than not content to "stay in the pocket", preferring to run the offense from the point without roaming a lot- I'm not sure why, but that was considered a big detriment by some (he had almost a ppg). Being that he converted to defense from forward just a few years prior, there was the occasional brain fart with the puck, and there were times when his pace came into question- but I never saw anything that would have made me hesitant to select him late first/early second.

Back in May, Future Considerations had Mews ranked at 16th and Dobber Prospects had him ranked at 21st:

Hopefully he keeps this up and continues to look like a third round steal.

Just for fun...if you take out the 20 year olds in front of him, Gridin is top 10 in scoring among 17-19 year olds which is pretty solid for a guy in his first year in the Q. I think he's starting to really hit his stride. He's not only putting up points but he's being selected as one of the stars in many of the games.
I really like Jamieson as a dark horse D man. He seems rock solid defensively and also has some offensive potential. Have you seen him play?
Really impressed with how things are progressing in the first year for the draft class. Obviously lots of time to see how things pan out but overall, I think the only pick from last year's draft that I really questioned...as someone who is not at all qualified to question NHL scouting (also I never question Iggy - so the Laing pick is exempt) was the Hoskins pick because I really would have liked to take Mrsa, Poirier, He or Kiviharju in hindsight. I'll be curious to watch his development.

I think it's important to note that Jamieson was drafted in his D+1 year, though he's still just 19, and he's riding shotgun this season with Landon Dupont (or Landon Dupont is riding shotgun with him), so I wouldn't expect him to be a huge point-producer at the next level. He's alot like Robyn Regehr- big and a reasonably good skater, unrelentingly physical and mean, hard to play against, and a stalwart defender. He has good puck-moving ability, a good shot, and the ability to join in on the offense, but like Regehr, I think his main focus in the pros will be shutting down (and physically punishing) the opposition- and there's absolutely nothing wrong with that. He sure won't embarrass anyone in the other areas of the game, though.
As I've said before, his name was brought in a meeting this past camp (on FlamesTV I think) when Conroy asked a congregation of coaches and scouts who they thought stood out in a positive way...

I've been impressed with his puck moving ability relative to what I expected it to be. A Reghehr-lite would be fantastic. I wasn't expecting much from him but would love to see him turn into a future 5-6 guy.

Seeing Jamieson many times, I'd say more Tanev like that Regher like.

I’m curious to see how he produces while McKenna is away for the world juniors. The Ruck twins both had big nights tonight.

I’m pretty sure he hasn’t been playing alongside McKenna much this season.

Dec.11th:
Luke Misa just keeps killin' it, with 1g, 2a, and +1 in a 6-5 OT loss to Brantford, with Martone and Rehkopf away at WJC camp. He is now tied for 10th in OHL scoring, with 28gp/18g/23a/41pts,+19, 2 PIM, and 12th in plus/minus.
Eric Jamieson is killin' it as well, picking up another 2a, and -1 in a 4-3 loss to Portland. He has 11 points in the last 12 games, and is 7th in the WHL for plus/minus with 30gp/6g/13a/19pts,+26, 27 PIM. Interestingly enough, he's tied for 22nd in D scoring.
Prince George beats Tri-City 4-3 in a SO with Jett Lajoie scoring the deciding goal. Laing gets 1a and was even, for a stat line of 26gp/9g/9a/18pts,+7, 20 PIM.
