At least Soto will now get all Metsy and we can laugh at this contract in a few years. And then the Bonilla-esque buyout with deferred money until 2099 for his great grandchildren to enjoy.

Stupid money, but good for him. Jays really need to sign at least a couple decent players and rebuild that garbage bullpen. Get to work, Shatkins. No time to waste.

Apparently he can opt out after 5 or increase his salary by 4 million per year for the last 10. Bringing to total to 805. Cohen has just given Soto and his agent direct access to his bank account for whatever he wants

Captain hindsight and all that, but I suppose it was obvious Cohen wasn't ever going to lose this one. Hell of a deal for Soto, and now we root for some Rendon'ing for the lolz.

Nothing hindsight about it at all.
It was widely acknowledged that Soto was going for the biggest pay day and it was widely acknowledged that Cohen wasn't going to be out bid.

I've said it when I started banging the Soto drum early in the year; the Jays had a legitimate shot because he just wanted to be paid the most amount of money and country and commitment to long term winning was lower down the totem pole. He proved that clearly with going across town when the Yanks were in it until the end and probably close.
Besides now having to now match whatever Boston, the Yanks, Dodgers and anyone else looking at plan B will pay for the same players, they have the eternal issue of playing in Canada...that was less of an issue for Soto it seemed.
Not that paying Soto $700M was ever going to work, and him signing somewhere needed to occur for the salary market/ relevancy to be established, but now that the race is on, I think the Jays once again finish bridesmaid in a lot of bidding the rest of the winter meetings and beyond.

Haha.
I mean....it's true, not just clic bait. The Jays will certainly pivot to the other FA's.
Doesn't mean any of them will sign in TO though.

When all was said and done I guess Soto was all about highest bidder. This morning that contract is a stunner. I honestly didn’t expect the Mets to win considering they’re high payroll already, but they got him. One hip flexor injury and they’ll regret that instantly. Teams are dumb man. The fact we had teams bidding and willing to come close should be grounds for getting rid of these guys. Nobody is worth that coin.

crazy. No player is worth that, but I guess good on Soto for taking 3/4 of a Billion dollars.

Cohen is worth 22 billion dollars (that we know of)
This contract is ~ 0.25% / year of his net worth.
It’s the equivalent of a millionaire spending $2500 a year.
Puts into perspective how little the money means to Cohen vs being the hero to restore the Mets and win a championship
At the end of the day he can’t take it with him , and he can’t (technically) buy a championship.
But still - Wow . Good job Boras

Surprised we haven't seen some creative arrangements like ownership in a team as previously floated with ohtani

I honestly wonder how soon we see the first billion dollar contract in sports? It's just astounding that there's this much money floating around a child's game for a single player.

Yeah. If I had $22 billion USD the Calgary Brewers would have been offering Soto that same contract.
From Cohen's perspective this makes sense, imo. It isn't a business to him, it's his hobby. He can get some tax writeoffs on losses, he's making the team more valuable long-term, and winning in the playoffs is fun.

I think it would exist already if basketball contracts allowed for longer terms. Basketball players more than any other, I would argue, affect the fortunes of their team due to the small rosters and large amount of time they're on the court. Maybe next after that is NFL QB.
