The Wild and Canes have both submitted offers for Gleb Veremeyev in the same 24 hour period and are proceeding to 2nd round offers. The Wild's offer has been submitted - the Canes can now submit theirs.

We should start making people write down why exactly they wanted these guys in the first place. Maybe stealth editing a week later, so if someone has to pass through waivers first. I'm actually curious about why some players are in demand.

They are darts on a dartboard really. With a 5% chance they pan out - lots of good examples panning out
Binnington was a guy for me

My reasoning for the last three :
Connor Kurth - university of Minnesota playing on a line with Matthew wood, and all three lighting it up. Who is driving the line? I guess we will know when they hit the AHL.
Cole Reinhardt - late blooming power forward in Ottawa. Over a ppg in the AHL, and continued scoring on his first cup of coffee with the senators. All about ice time, and whether he gets it.
Jakub Malek - the top goalie in Liiga at the moment. Finnish goalies are great. New Jersey doesn't have a clear path of goalie prospects, so a really nice dark horse.
All these dudes are now in the AHL, so no risk of you dweebs stealing one!

you just never know. It's gotten harder to steal gems these days because GMs pay a lot more attention, but a few years ago you could really find some awesome mid/late-round prospects hidden in the NCAA or something. When I was the Leafs GM, I signed the following guys for free:
Matthew Grzelcyk
Colton Parayko
Connor Hellebuyck
Andrew Copp
Andrew Mangiapane
and more. I've obviously signed tons of duds in between, and again, GMs have become way more diligent when it comes to finding these prospects ... but even then, I currently have a few guys on my roster who are everyday NHLers who I've picked up for free (e.g. Perbix, Lilleberg, Holmberg).

Hellebuyck for free is NUTS.
I think every roster spot is an asset - and if you don't have a player sitting in a roster spot that has trade value, or potential, it's a waste. Some of these guys turn into something, some of them become secondary trade chips. But it's all free.
And the teams that consistently have strong asset basis, for the most part, play in this space to some degree.

Anyone who isn't under contract to a CPHL team and not eligible for the draft as a first-year, yes. Since the CPHL draft is only 4 rounds (but used to be 5), there are more prospects available as free agents.
I assume devo is referring to when it was easier to have those guys slip through the cracks, but nowadays there are so many publications and whatnot that trumpet guys that it's harder to find ones that aren't snapped up. As soon as Sportsnet publishes a list of college free agents, you can bet most GMs are perusing the list and then frantically checking to see if that player is signed yet.
IRL Hellebucyk, for example, was a 5th round pick, and obviously wasn't drafted in the CPHL. 10 years ago, it's not hard to imagine a guy like that slipping through the cracks here and having devo sign him;; his college stats are great, for example.

JVR in the CPHL and NHL somehow always finds a way to get paid big bucks.
