Default Calgary Flames All Time Roster - #1 Defenseman

So some details ...

1. Calgary players only
2. I'll look at games played, production and PPG to list options.
3. My cut off won't effect options as I'll go deeper than required
4. I'll label them by rank (3rd line LW) but don't select the player that matches that role the best, pick the best player.

Day to Day

We elect a position, say 2nd line RW, remove that name and do the 3rd line RW the next day.

I'll post a summary as we go along.

Calgary Flames All Time Roster

Gary Roberts - Joe Nieuwendyk - Jarome Iginla
Johnny Gaudreau - Doug Gilmour - Theo Fleury
Matthew Tkachuk - Sean Monahan - Lanny McDonald
Alex Tanguay - Joel Otto - Joe Mullen
Hakan Loob - Kent Nilsson

D1 - D2
D3 - D4
D5 - D6
D7

Miikka Kiprusoff
Mike Vernon

So many defenseman you'd like to include.

Did a hard cut off at 200 games played.

This is going to be a fascinating exercise because to me, its pretty clear cut as to the top 5....who the other 2 are after that is where it could go in any direction.

Yeah I have alot of time for an argument on Gio- fact is the man at his age DID win a Norris when many there were so many hurdles he had to climb to get there, but I feel Chopper should have won a Norris or multiple Norri while here, and did take other hardware and honors. I feel he is the clear number 1 (and not far off the running for the Franchise number 1 player)

poor Pekka Rautakallio..I'm a little surprised actually that his Calgary tenure was only 2 seasons

yeah I think I see about 9 names legit in the mix- the first 7 on the list and two others listed later (one quite far down)

yeah that's a nice list- I guess comfort in the fact none of them should be in the mix for top 7- guess we hope one or more of the current guys, some day..

As good as Gio is, his best is not on the same level as MacInnis' best, but Gio has been the leader of the team for eight seasons and will likely surpass Iggy as the longest serving captain by the end of his contract. How can he not be the number one D in the context of the Flames?

Went with Giordano, expecting Mac to win.

I think TJ Brodie belongs as one of the six.

Had to go with MacInnis, although I gave Gio some serious thought.
Gio is definitely a very close second for me.

Really wanted to go with Gio but playoff performance is still the big hole in his resume. Chopper for me.

Yeah exactly ...

I wanted to go deep enough that my cut point wouldn't influence the 7 defenseman picked. You could argue that 10-12 names would do it, but then that robs people of seeing a list that goes deeper into Flames history.

200 games is a bit harsh, but there were so many defensemen. It was easier to cut off each forward position around 20, but defensemen could have gone to 35 if you included character, and less games played.

I went Gio, he’ll end up #2 but he’s rarely gotten the credit he deserves through his career so I’ll chip in wherever I can

This is for #1 D for Flames All-Time. MacInnis is it. Gio will be the 2nd. Argument is moot about being the captain of the Flames. It'll be like having an argument of who you'd want as the All-Time right wing between Iggy and MacDonald. It's like a no-brainer turned into a Dumb and Dumber conversation, TBH.
