What is up with Vegas? 2nd player in as many years caught with PEDs

Chris Johnston @reporterchris
Valentin Zykov of the Vegas Golden Knights has been suspended 20 games without pay for violating the NHL/NHLPA Performance Enhancing Substances Program.

Two players in two seasons have been levelled with this charge in that organisation. One might wonder about VGK's culpability in all of this.

considering it's Las Vegas, I'd say performance-enhancing substances aren't the worst thing they could have in their systems.

Yikes team says he used it with full knowledge.

Key sentence from a #VGK release on the Zykov suspension: "Valentin knowingly used a banned substance without the consent, recommendation or knowledge of our team. We support the NHL/NHLPA Performance Enhancing Substances Program and respect the decision here."

Considering it’s the NHL, you can be sure every team has players with “Vegas goodies” in their system, no matter where they play

under the CBA the NHL has to keep it confidential. Unless the player says what it was, we will never know.

Holy crap. VGK has already used $1.3 m of their $4.75 m of LTIR.

Interesting that Zykov claims he doesn't know how he tested positive compared to the team statement that he knowingly used the PED.

Hmmmm. I am often the first to reject nonsensical conspiracy theories, but there is something about this that doesn't pass muster. This is the second time a VGK player has received a PED infraction. VGK is really tight to the cap. Could a PED suspension be a precursor toward contract termination? How does that work?

I could see how dumping a fairly ineffective player like Zykov would be beneficial for VGK.

I say all teams that played Vegas and lost should be compensated with points! Typical Vegas.

Although I do find it funny that during the pre-game skate the Vegas club has a bunch of show girls at the visitor end shaking things and banging on the glass to trying to get the attention of the visiting players.

Jesse Granger @JesseGranger_
Despite Valentin Zykov’s statement saying he’s unaware of how he tested positive for a banned substance, George McPhee said Zykov told him in a conversation yesterday that he knowingly took the substance, and has taken that sort of substance for 4 years.

PED's should be legalized. Most, if not all, professional athletes take them anyway.

I agree that many more take it than get caught, but no way should it be legalized. There should be way more in competition and off season testing to catch cheaters

It's practically impossible, which leads to "who gets caught" situation, which is inherently unfair. Medical advancements in PED's are incredibly fast. What's good (untraceable/uncheckable) today, becomes no good (traceable/checkable) tomorrow. Professional athletes choose to subject their bodies to a tremendous amount of physical and mental abuse; not just in NHL, in all pro-sports. PED's are just one of the tools available to them. Legalizing PED's would make them safer and more scrutinized, medically.

Not only that, but I want elective surgery for athletes to improve their performances.

I want swimmers with blow holes in their heads. I want boxers with iron fists, I want hockey players with sharpened elbows and horse legs. I want receivers with hands like a lacrosse stick.

We need to move to the next stage of freakshow athletes.
