Just ignore strokes, make it timed instead. All tee of at the same time, first in the hole wins.

So theoretically, that could make this extra long - since only one group will be playing at once anyway.

This is like a Monday qualifier on crack.

Two groups still seems weird, since the second group would know if someone birdied in the first group, which could affect their strategy.

I don't think there's ever been a seven man playoff on tour, but I could be wrong.

The split group dynamic doesn't make a huge strategic difference, the second group will still be teeing off before the other group finishes the hole, and par is still going to be the bare minimum to stay alive, no way all four in the first group make bogey.

Not on tour, but there have been 7+ for 1 at the Monday qualifiers.

It does create the potential for an unfair advantage either by affecting strategy or even different wind conditions, etc

Wasn't Munoz in the same group as McIlroy?

They'll know before their second shot how aggressive/what level of risk they have to take.

Four pars it is. Matsuyama in best shape now.

But realistically they would be playing for birdie no matter what. Only if everyone in the first group made bogey would it be a big advantage because then they can play center green and two putts. And in the end everyone in the second group did terribly so no advantage at all.
