So Sekera goes on LTIR. Oilers currently have 4.9mil in cap space according to CapFriendly.

This means that they still can't sign Nurse for 5mil+, let alone Nurse and another defenceman to fill in for Sekera for a total of 5mil, until the season has already started. Is this correct? Because they have to wait for the season to start before putting players on the LTIR?

Well there goes another Oilers season down the drain.

Looking at CapFriendly, with Sekera out and Nurse unsigned, currently the Oilers have Matthew Benning and Kevin Gravel (who?) as their 4th and 5th dmen. LOL!

I'd also like to know, what happens if Sekera is cleared to return in say, January.
If they used LTIR space to fill the hole, what happens?

They need to plug this hole. They should trade The Tenderness for a poor-man's Larsson.

He wasn’t the same player last season when he came back from the other injury. This is a really bad break for him as his career trajectory is taking a big nosedive.

He slipped on one of the many banners sitting around ready to be raised on opening night.

Sucks for sekera, tough injury that could affect his ability to keep a job going forward. Silver lining being that at least for the duration of the injury he doesn’t have to be playing with the oilers.

Every other tea. In the league just breathed a big sigh of relief...with him in the lineup the Oilers would be cup favorites. I wonder if McJesus can play D

True. But sports like hockey and skiing, where you have a solid boot on, versus a soccer or football cleat, tends to lead to a speedier return to sport.

Erik Karlsson was out 2.5 months (lacerated not ruptured), Travis Zajac was out 3 months, Sami Salo was out 4 months, Andrej Mesaros was out 5 months. A skier like Aksel Lund Svindal was out 4 months.

I wouldn't be surprised if Sekera is able to return by Christmas. But by then it will likely be too late for the Oilers.

It's August; it's already too late for the Oilers.

The Oilers literally have to resort to filling out their roster with gravel.

According to my calendar, it's not too late for the Oilers until the second scrimmage of training camp. Right now, it's too late for the Eskimos.

Even worse, they might have to give a spot to Keegan Lowe.

No, contrarty to popular belief, you are able to use LTIR during the off-season as evident by Horton and Lupul last year which caused a lot of confusion.
https://www.pensionplanpuppets.com/2...n-connor-brown

There is different calculations and reasoning for using LTIR during the off-season and day 1 of the season.

But still, depending on the actual makeup of the final team, they could reassign players to the AHL prior to the season starting. Most notably Puljujarvi and Koskinen are waivered exempt. Although Koskinen's 2.5M cap-hit would not be completely buried.

That would give the team roughly 7M to re-sign Nurse and sign a replacement for Sekera. When the season starts, Sekera is placed on injury reserve and Koskinen and Puljujarvi would be recalled using the LTIR relief.

The bigger issue with this is that unlike the Hortons, Prongers and Hossas of the NHL, Sekera is expected to come back mid-season. Once he does, and the 5.5M cap relief is immediately removed, the team would be required to become cap-compliant. If Nurse is making more than 4.9M (assuming the other replacement player cap-hit is able to be completely buried) then they are in trouble with their current make up of the team. Not that Sekera's injury really changed much, the team still needed to sign Nurse (and a 14th forward) for under 4.9M or make roster moves.

Yeah from what I remember Williams was a slight tear he got while running, initially they didn't even think it required surgery, odds are Sekera will be out till christmas, return for half the season and suck just like last year.
