It’s being talked about that Bedard might not be the consensus #1 of this years draft so much anymore….

Nov.12th:

67's beat Niagara 7-2, no Beck.

Halifax loses 2-0 to Charlottetown. Whynot didn't play.

Jordan had no points, even, in a 5-1 loss to the Tigers. He also had a checking to the head minor, followed by a fighting major. 16gp/2g/5a/7pts,+3, 15 PIM.

Ciona had 1a,+1 in a 2-1 OT loss to the Hitmen. 15gp/7g/15a/22pts,+17, 16 PIM. Tied for 18th in scoring, and tied for 1st in plus/minus.

Bell had 2a, even, in a 7-3 loss to Spokane. 16gp/6g/11a/17pts,+4, 20 PIM. Tri-City is 7th in the West, and 16th out of 22 teams in the 'dub, but they are tied for 7th in goals-scored.

Don't sleep on Leo Carlsson
I think the big 3 is actually a big 4.

I think he still goes #1.

To me the intrigue starts at #2

On pure talent, it's probably Michkov, who could be the best Russian player since AO.
But the risk factors on when you get him over are there for sure.

And he's a winger not a centre.

So I can see it going something like: Bedard, Fantelli, Carlsson, Michkov. The team taking Michkov will have to wait, but when he comes over he will likely be a star immediately.

I think Fantilli will challenge Bedard for first overall. Fantilli is dynamic like Bedard and Michkov, but he has qualities that those 2 don't have: size (6'2"), and physicality. Fantilli might just be the best skater in the draft as well. Bedard is putting up 2 points-per-game in junior, but Fantilli is doing that in college against older players (albeit on a much more talented team).

I think Michkov will go where you put him, or even a bit later due to Russian concerns.

Nov.13th:

Huckins had no points, even, in a 3-1 loss to Rimouski. 17gp/5g/6a/11pts,+3, 20 PIM. Sherbrooke (14-3-1-1) still sits first in the West, second overall to Quebec-who has a record of 17-1-0-1.

Few CHL notes:

Of the top-10 scorers in the WHL, six are projected to go in the first 2 rounds of this years draft: Connor Bedard, Koehn Ziemmer, Riley Heidt, Andrew Cristall, Samuel Honzek, and Zach Benson.

Just noticed that Anaheim draft pick D Pavel Mintukov (10th overall 2022) is second overall in OHL scoring, with 28 pts in 19 games. Some had him going later in the first round. Anaheim also drafted 2 other highly regarded QMJHL D-men in the 2nd round-Noah Warren at 42, and Tristan Luneau at 53.

Nov.16th:

Whynot had no points,-3 in a 7-4 loss to Acadie-Bathurst. 17gp/1g/7a/8pts,-4, 8 PIM.

In a battle of the QMJHL titans, Quebec (first overall) beats Sherbrooke (first in the Eastern Conference) 5-4. Huckins was clutch, with 1g,1a, even. 18gp/6g/7a/13pts,+3, 22 PIM.

Yeesh. Prospects are looking pretty weak this year.

None of these prospects are worth a damn. A bunch of defenders who can't move the puck, and a pile of nothing forwards.

Beck is the only guy who might have a legit shot, but he can't stay healthy.

Outside of Connor Bedard, I think most impressive are Tanner Howe and Brayden Yager, both still D-2 and in the top 20 of point scorers. Tanner Howe I have a soft spot for.

Meh, Ciona has more of a chance than Beck IMO, because of roles. Beck needs to put on a ton of muscle to thrive as a bottom sixer and would need to show a lot more offensive potential to be even in a versteeg class of middle sixer. Ciona already plays the bottom 6 game.

It’s hard to believe that Lucas Ciona might be the 3rd best player we picked in 2021, after Coronato and Sergeev. It will be interesting to see if any of Huckins, Whynot, or Jordan get offered contracts of any sort.

Nov.18th:

Ottawa keeps rolling, beating Hamilton, 4-3. No Beck.

Whynot somehow manages to get no points,-1 in a 9-4 win over Saint John. 18gp/1g/7a/8pts,-5, 8 PIM.

No Jordan tonight for Moose Jaw.

Bell had 1a (on the game-tying goal), even, in a 4-3 OT win over the Hitmen. 17gp/6g/12a/18pts,+4, 20 PIM.

There aren't really any high picks who are playing the CHL.

The better prospects are in the AHL, NCAA, and Europe.
Huckins, Jordan, and Whynot are kind of disappointing, but not shockingly so.
Jack Beck seems to be a better pick, but he hasn't made any progression from last year.
Lucas Ciona looks like he's the best CHL pick valuewise. But even he has slowed down in recent weeks.
Parker Bell is doing fine.

A guy like Ryan Francis was better than almost all of them, yet wasn't signed. It'll be interesting to see how many of these guys end up being signed.

Well that's exactly it.

Beyond Coronato and the guys in the AHL. There isn't a prospect of note in the system.

I get there haven't been many high draft picks lately, but you could say the same for many of the top teams every year.

The scouting team needs a legitimate overhaul beacuse they haven't hit on anyone past the first round in quite a while.

I respect your opinion, but I think it's way too early to say this.

-Jack Beck has had injury problems, but that's because he needs to bulk up IMO. He's still as good a F prospect as we have had in the CHL in quite a while. Last year, he was the only 67 to have above a ppg-and he was WAY above that mark. Good shot, good speed and IQ.

-Topi Ronni will surprise everyone. He showed up to rookie camp as the fittest player, and played well. He's a 6'2" Backlund.

-Parker Bell is at a ppg on a poor team, excellent for a power-forward drafted in the 5th round. Great size (6'4") and a good skater.

-Ciona will never be a top-6 player, but he's looking more and more to be legit. He was one of (if not the) best players at rookie camp. He's vastly improved his footwork, and he's tough and physical.

-Kerins is developing slowly, but he's looking good in both the AHL and ECHL. I watched him play live this year, and he's an excellent 200-ft player. Needs time.

-Nikolayev is starting to come around after a slow start, but it's too early to tell. He's another guy that I've compared to Backlund. Excellent defensive player.

-Sergeev is almost at the same level as Wolf. 6'3", has excelled at every level. 2.69 GAA, .917% at the college level. Truly one of crown jewels in terms of prospects.

-Stromgren gets a lot of hate in here, but I still like him. He's still only 19 (June birthday). He's big, and skates like the wind. For players under-20 playing in the SHL, Stromgren is 6th- with 4 points in 19 games (10th in ppg).

Most of our best prospects are playing in higher levels, but that's mainly because of our lack of picks in recent years.
