I don’t really see the Flames looking to make a trade for any position other than goaltending.

Not only do the Flyers have 20 year old Carter Hart waiting in the wings, but they also have 25 year old Alex Lyon who had 11 starts last year.
He had an incredible 94 saves in a game last season.

I wonder, could this be the Flames target?

Philly will still have to sort out their 3-headed monster but maybe they just waive Pickard if they add a new guy to the mix..
Could be risky for the Flames as we don't know how Schneider will do after hip surgery but it's just an idea that could work out handsomely if he returns to play the way he did before he hurt his hip a couple seasons ago.
|
Hard no.
Schneider had hip surgery in the off season.

Schneider seems to have some pretty big red flags that I’d steer well clear of. Two bad seasons due to hip problems, hip surgery, and real bad numbers in his AHL conditioning stint so far.
That’s a little too risky.

I wasn't against the Smith signing because we all knew the risk of him aging. This year it's showing though and you have to think within the next 10 games if he (along with the team), don't play better defensively he'll be moved with salary eaten. A trading partner for taking him on would have to be a non-playoff team, and it'd likely be a mediocre swap, to give everyone a reset without either team taking on salary. So I could very well see a guy like Anderson in Ottawa being acquired, or one of the Arizona goaltenders as a desperation move, or at best Lundqvist at the deadline. All in all I don't think there are many trading partners out there.

Yeah, it seemed pretty likely that he was going to decline. He was never an elite goalie to begin with. Every team that he has been on was always hunting for someone better. He was good, but not a goalie any team wanted to hinge their whole season on.

I highly doubt they would be looking to move Smith for someone this unproven.

Well its not like Smith is proven to be good, at least someone unproven hasn't shown that they're bad like Smith has.

I'd take Hart or Lyon in a second, the cost of the latter likely significantly lower.
We've got nothing to lose at this point, our goal tending from the ECHL -> AHL -> NHL has proven to be terrible.
However I'm also part of the camp that wants Sigalet fired into the sun, I cant imagine how he's survived the last 4 regime purges because he's done nothing with our goalies.

I'd love for one of the columnists at The Athletic to interview Sigalet and get his take on the goalies. He could also shed some light on his process when working with these guys. Can you do much with a veteran player like Mike Smith? Is he open to being coached after all these years? What's his vision for Rittich? Is Gillies moving in the right direction? Parsons?

His last AHL game was good, though, apparently. I'd need to see i=him in some NHL games.

So a goalie coach can only be successful if he has a great goalie?

Gillies and Parsons weren't considered to be crap going in. Elliott was considered to be a competent goalie (sure behind a good D but still).
