Default Laptop Wireless Problem

A friend of mine has a Toshiba m40x and the wireless card isn't working, despite looking under the hardware it saying it's working.

I downloaded the drivers but they don't seem to be taking. Any ideas?

Is there anything in the Bios that needs to be changed?

turns out, the thing is "connecting" and showing that the laptop is connected to the network, yet it's not working

(got to love tech support over MSN, and then me relaying my WTF? to CP)

Does the access show as "local" or "local and internet" when he is connected? I know Vista shows this, but I cant recall if XP does as well.

Have you checked the router settings?

Is there an available IP from the router?

I haven't done anything to the router

I took a quick look at the laptop last night (but not at her place), then chatted on MSN this morning (via her desktop computer) which made me realize that it's not the network card itself.

I haven't tried it on another wireless router/network as I haven't had the opportunity (schedules are a b*tch) but it seems to me to be the router.

Since I'm not that familiar with routers what should I do/tell her to do? I tried the ole "unplug let sit 30 seconds, then try it again" routine that seems to work whenever my router here at home acts up.

It depends on how it was setup really.

One thing to check is if they limited the number of IPs in the DNS settings.

My g/f gets the same problem from time to time. In the system tray (bottom left right hand corner) the area that shows your wireless connection, if you right click on it and then click "repair" that usually gets it working for her.
