Aw man, the timing of this couldn't be worse for the U.S.
Trump and the GOP will no doubt appoint a far-right conservative as her replacement...probably by tomorrow.

Yeah it's a guarantee Cruz or Tom Cotton are rammed through before the election. America now hanging by a thread.

They won't fill it before the election, instead using picking a new justice as an election issue to amp-up the evangelicals, but if Trump loses they'll definitely go ahead and fill it between November and January.

Stupid question and excuse my ignorance but would that still works if the republicans lose the senate in November? Or do they still get to fill the seat as a they wave goodbye on their way out in January? Of course they will fill the seat if they lose anyway but the justification for doing that after you are voted out is just wrong. Bit of a mess.

We’ll be lucky if Ted Cruz isn’t confirmed by Monday.

Senate sits until mid January, and gets turned over about a week before the President does, but there's nothing except precedent preventing them from passing whatever they want in the interim.
The one possible wrinkle I've heard (haven't actually researched this myself so it may not be correct), is that because Arizona is a special election (for McCain's seat), the winner gets seated immediately. It wouldn't be enough to flip it but it would give them a narrower majority, if true (and if Kelly wins).

But now, with the tables turned, McConnell has made clear he will not follow the same course. Instead he will try immediately push through a Trump nominee so as to ensure a conservative justice to fill Ginsburg's liberal shoes, even if President Trump were to lose his re-election bid. Asked what he would do in circumstances like these, McConnell said: "Oh, we'd fill it."

What are the odds that the GOP will play by the same rules? We all know what's going to happen.

Her seat will be filled before the election - just before Trump challenges his election loss, so that the court can overturn the election and hand Trump another term.

Sadly, the chances of this exact scenario actually playing out are probably quite high. That country is so f***ed.

Has there ever been a Calgarian sitting on the Supreme Court? This is historic.

I'm still not convinced we'll see a civil war, but this is definitely the biggest event that could kickstart the chain of events that makes it happen.

What would it be if they filled it now, 6-3 conservative judges? That country is in a lot of trouble.

Cruz is more a spawn of hell than a Calgarian.
But the US is effing effed. What a 3rd world country. Lifetime appointments to the supreme court... banana republic.
