The flames would obviously prefer to keep as much leverage in trade discussions for Brodie and Frolik as possible

I could be overthinking it however; I’ve had a long day of driving home from BC To think about things

Everyone knows that Calgary has to move some cap to be compliant this year, it’s no secret. The range of what Tkachuk will make this year puts them over regardless, and really depends on the term they ultimately agree upon.

Theoretically speaking...could the Flames sign Tkachuck today for a 1 year contract at 6.5M AAV and then an 8 year contract for 8M AAV starting next year?

I vaguely remember some restriction around this..but can't quite remember.

Players who sign a 1 year contract aren't eligible to sign their next contract until after Jan 1.

So could be a risk for Tkachuk.

Hmm, I was told less than a week ago that the flames would be "swimming" in cap space.

2018-19 Flames with career years and their 2nd best season

Gaudreau 99 84
Monahan 82 64
Lindholm 78 45
Gio 74 56
Hanifin 33 32
Jankowski 32 25
Ryan 38 38
Tkachuk 77 49

Basically every core player (outside of Backlund and Brodie) put up career numbers and the top guys were significantly higher than their 2nd best year and beat their career average like a drum.

The Flames should be looking to get Tkachuk a 2 year deal @ 3.5

That is what great players get coming off their ELC (Trouba / Morrissey /Huberdeau ) when they really have no other option than playing with their current team) if not locked up for 6-7 years with a discount for their 4 rfa years

If MT has 2 years matching his 2018-19 ( Then he gets a 10x 6) total for 8 years 67M.

The Flames had an unusual year point up points. Hard to imagine that happening 2 years in a row.

7.5 x 5 is not taking any discount for their RFA years.

Aho Connor Tkachuk, Nylander and even Laine are not any better than Barkov, Mackinnon, Monahan, Gaudreau Schieffle when they signed their long term deals for a lot less than 8.4 x 5

And why would MT sign for 7 million total when any other team will give him more than that a year for 4-5 years?

Kristen Anderson @KdotAnderson
If you were wondering about the status of Matthew Tkachuk's contract negotiations, he's reached the 'representing the #Flames in the @calgarystampede parade' stage ... so I would think things are looking up.

Montreal just signed Ben Chiarot for 3.5 @ 3 so they are down to 8.4M cap space with qualifying offers outstanding so they won't be making a repeat of the offer sheet.

Brodie and Stone and Hamonic runway getting shorter.

I do think we will see Tkachuk sign sooner than Monahan, Lindholm, Hanifin, and Gaudreau all who were weeks/months into free agency. Tkachuk needs to get done so Treliving can make other moves. Once Bennett and Rittich file for arbitration only Mangipane can sign an offer sheet (assuming Tkachuk is signed).

Some rumors on Twitter it could be close but nothing credible. It would be awesome if he signs during Stampede.

Do you have any degree of confidence that Treliving could convince MT to take 3.5 for two years based on an argument that he just had a great year and probably won't do it again?

I would think its either a 3 year or 8 year deal.

Guessing the Flames prefer the 3 year

Player wants security with the longer term

I expect that Tkachuk wants a deal that takes him to UFA (is that 4 or 5 years?). But with a big AAV.

I expect that the Flames don't mind short term (3 years or less) as long as the AAV is not too high, that helps their contention window. They only want to pay a big AAV on a 8 year deal.

4 years would take him to UFA, I doubt the Flames would want to entertain that length of contract.

I would think the player wants a longer term contract.
