I wonder how damaging signing players to offer sheets is for a GM’s relationship with other GM’s. For example let’s say Dallas offer sheets 3 guys (no flames), is Treliving less inclined to do a trade with him because he “rocked the boat” even though it didn’t affect us directly. I recall a Neil Smith interview where the interviewer asked about the Sakic offer sheet in 97. Smith said he didn’t want to but was ordered to and then he was asked if that offer had affected his chances of another GM job once he was fired from the Rangers. Smith replied that he wondered if it had but that he didn’t know. I interpreted it as “yes I was blackballed but I can’t say that.” Probably sour grapes but an interesting perspective.

Part of it, I assume, is to stop teams who give up the four 1sts from just trading for a super late first every year that their pick is half decent and giving that one up.

The picks in compensation need to be your own I'm pretty sure.

Using your own picks likely closes a loop hole where teams could acquire picks for future consideration, and if the offer sheet fails, those picks go back as the future considerations.

Offer sheets likely aren't discouraged, so much as they never go public. GMs and teams get a pretty good sense from other team officials or agents if a team can or will match, and avoid sticking the neck out publicly.

The Sabres got mad at Lowe because they told him before it went public, they they would match for Vanek so not to bother. Lowe, being the egotistical rebel and crusader for GM rights he thinks he is, did it anyways.
Burke didn't care when Lowe did it for Penner, as hubris was again involved.
Our former GM didn't have many original ideas at the best of times and knew he was running out of time and bullets when he disastrously offer sheeted OReilly, so he didn't care what Col thought, it was for self preservation.

Yes, we’re discussing why that is.

It would be a fun scenario...until you realize that Calgary would potentially need to make a decision on Tkachuck before knowing if Tampa will match on point.

Isn’t Toronto in a position to not be able to offersheet a big name RFA since trading away the 1st for Marleau??

The four first round picks need to be within the next 5 years - so assuming they don't trade away any future first rounders, they can still give their 2021-2024 picks as compensation.

NHL: This offer sheet thing you’ve proposed could really get out of hand. We’d need a way to limit it somehow, otherwise top-tier stars coming off ELCs would essentially just be UFAs.
NHLPA: What if the compensatory picks for the top tier all had to be the team’s own picks?
NHL: I think that would work. Can we make it the top two tiers?
NHLPA: Can we add one year to the pool they’d have to draw from? Four of your own first round picks from the next five years, for example.
NHL: That sounds like a deal to me.
NHLPA: Yep, agreed.

That’s how I imagine it all happened. Mind you, I also live in an Aaron Sorkin fantasy world, so not only was the discussion super polite, efficient and agreeable... it was also done while everyone was walking together down the hall to wherever each of them were going.

it's gonna be weird when Tkachuk is the highest paid Flame. The economics of the NHL have changed so much in even a few months

He's probably the odds-on favorite for post-Gio captain though, so it makes some sense

I still think the Flames next captain is Sean Monahan.

The Flames have been grooming him for the position since the day he was drafted, and everything in how he has been handled indicates that the team views him as a permanent fixture.

I could see Monahan too. Both got letters at a young age.

Tkachuk's been to the same groomer though. Both became a split assistant captain in their third year. Monahan with the permanent A in his 4th, probably won't happen to Tkachuk though as Backlund isn't going anywhere.

Such a short-sighted, Oilers perspective. You're sewering the economics of the 2nd contract, that much more.

Treliving says Tkachuk's representatives have not shied away from engaging with the Flames at all. It has been real productive dialog.

One theory that I heard from Elliot Friedman the other day was that some players might actually be willing to look at a two year Bridge Deal knowing that the cap accelerator will not be used in the next two years and banking on a better deal when the cap increases more in two years. This may not apply to a premium level guy like Tkachuck, but moreso to a guy like Bennett.

Still at some point GM's may need to be willing to make these younger guys take a shorter second contract. Certainly from a trade return perspective the minimum you would want for Tkachuck is 2 firsts, second, third which puts him over a 8.6 million dollar salary. But as part of offer sheet values and rules, that also implies that you are expecting a 5 year term.

Might be worth trying a two year deal here with a nice July 1st 2020 bonus to try and buy a couple years to better fit him in.

Can these guys hire AC to roll video of whoever is being discussed... I don’t need to stare at different faces who are listening intently to their headphones. Why is this on TV!?

Definitely skip to the 4:05 mark as recommended.

I think Mony was destined to be Gio's heir-apparent, but Chucky has quickly de-throned him
