Shapo lost a tough three-setter to Luciano Darderi earlier today. After winning the first set in a tie-break, he dropped the next two 6-3 7-6(4). Darderi is one of several up-and-coming Italians.

By the way, in case you were curious, Denis hit 2 aces to 14 double faults. Yes, you read that right, 14 double faults today.

Indeed. He also had 64 unforced errors. What a missed opportunity to turn his rank around.
Oh Denis. Denis, Denis.....

64 UEs in a three set match is remarkable That's worse than WTA!

I would have liked to have seen how Shapo would have fared against Navone who has been a beast on clay this season. I think the Argentine has a chance of a deep run in Rome.

Just when Denis provides Canadian fans a glimmer of hope that his game is coming back together, he throws in an absolute stinker. You just have to wonder if he's ever going to turn it around.

If you don't bring your best game (or at the very least 85% of your best game), it's tough to win on the ATP tour these days. I can't remember a time when there was so much depth on the ATP tour. Darderi has given some of the top guys all they can handle, he lost a close match to Taylor Fritz in Madrid and last week made the semi-finals at a challenger event that he lost to Navone who just happens to be his next opponent in Rome.

Nadal is playing some really good tennis today from what I've seen. Bjorn Bergs is also playing well but has no answers

Bad news: He gets Hurkacz next

Cool that Genie is playing on the ITF, she could have easily packed it in. Maybe some pickleball has helped her hands (touch).

I didn't see this match, but was thoroughly impressed by Shapo and his game at Madrid. Seeing that he fired 14 doubles with woeful serve %s against the level of player he was playing here in Rome just reinforces that he is what he is now. The mistake fans are now making is thinking that he's more than what he is.
We all need to come to terms with the fact that he's probably a 30-60 ranked ATP player, which is nothing to scoff at, but won't really ever be able to contend for big titles with any regularity. If he commits to playing a very controlled and cerebral game like he did in Madrid he could get himself back into the top 20, but I don't think it's in his DNA.

He could get hot for a week like in Madrid and make some runs in Masters or Grand Slams. But expect a lot of first round exits too.

Marina Stakusic continues her rise up the WTA rankings as she advances at a ITF tourney in Prague. Now up to a new career high of #183, I wouldn't be surprised if she starts getting into qualifying for WTA tourneys later this year (have to assume a main draw wildcard is coming her way for the National Bank Open in August).
