True, homemade nog is the way to go.

Though if you're lazy... the storebought stuff is ok, as long as it doesn't have the words "Diet, Lite, Fat-free" etc in the name.

Haha, I think you'll change your mind as you get up there in years.

I drink Lite Eggnog mixed 1/2 and 1/2 with milk (and a good shot of rum if I'm not going anywhere), and I don't have to worry so much about my arteries nor my waistline.

I was lead to believe that there exists for purchase at select retailers a chocolate egg nog. This is news to me. I shall require a sample of said chocolate nog before the stockings, currently hung by the chimney with care, are removed to make way for other seasonal trinkets displayed for the next subsequent holiday festival.

Just got my first carton yesterday! Had to do the Nog celebration upon seeing it available for the first time of the season.

Oh I have no misconceptions that it's really really bad for me. I just haven't found a good tasting Lite/Diet/whatever version of it.

Egg Nog definately falls under the "Better it tastes, the worse it is for you" category.

6 egg yolks
6 egg whites
1 can sweetened condensed milk
1 litre whole milk (can substitute upto 100 mL with cream if you like it very rich)
1 tsp ground nutmeg (grated fresh, not the pre-ground stuff)
1 vanilla bean (split down the middle and scrape the bean paste out)
3-4 ounces of bourbon or rum

1. Beat egg yolks. Add condensed milk and mix. Set aside.
2. In sauce pan, over medium-high heat, combine milk (and cream), nutmeg and vanilla bean and the bean pod. Stir occasionally, and bring to a boil.
3. Remove vanilla pod. Remove from heat, and temper the hot mix into the egg yolks. do this very slowly at first otherwise you will have scrambled eggs!
4. Return to medium heat and simmer (~5 minutes)
5. Remove from heat. Set in an ice bath until it cools then refridgerate until chilled.
6. Beat egg whites to stiff peaks. Fold into cooled mixture. Add bourbon or rum.
7. Chill and serve with a sprinkle of fresh grated nutmeg on top

I'm happy enough with the store bought stuff... just add some Bacardi white rum to the mix as i'm not a huge spiced rum fan..

343 calories per cup - that has to be one of the most insanely calorie dense drinks ever. Might as well drink bacon grease!!

Eggnog whipped cream rules on desserts! Just mix eggnog in with some whipping cream...soooo tasty!

Also, I love doing French toast with eggnog instead of milk!

how to make the perfect egg nog:

you will need:

1 carton egg nog
1/4 tsp. nutmeg
1/4 tsp. cinnamon
1/8 tsp. fresh crushed allspice
1 bottle dark rum

fill a large glass with ice, add dark rum until glass is full. Throw remaining ingredients away.

Great job, thanks for these recipies, i haven't found the right way to make Eggnog yet, but i'll give these a whorl.

Because i cant think of anywhere else to ask this, does anybody know of a good place to buy a decent chocolate advent calender? I'm getting a little sick of the cheap Zellers/Wal-Mart ones you get.is there anywhere to get one with good tasting chocolates?
