Hanging your whole socio-political identity on making fun of ‘older guys’ (who are maybe 10-15 years older than you) is hilarious for a guy in what I presume is his late 30s.

You can’t buy comedy like “#### the government, I’m watering my lawn with a HOSE!”
There’s a not-insignificant number of you guys who would probably feel assaulted if you were hit with a stiff breeze.

I put a lot of new plants in the ground prior to the breakage which cost me a fair chunk of money, as in take up project budgets for the next few years. These plants, while most are drought resistant, are only once their roots are established. To do this requires more water for a season or two. I have already lost a few plants and some are looking weary. Up until recently I wasn't allowed to water them unless I had a rain barrel, which wouldn't have covered them all.
So ya, when I see people get to fill their recreational pools so that they can survive in the heat (not sure what else they do the rest of the day when they aren't in it), and I'm watching my investment into my property wither... then sure thing, call me a ragey old man getting upset over nothing.
No one is complaining about watering their lawn really, it's the other things like using a hose to water plants or gardens or even underground sprinklers to do that. The city must think that underground sprinklers are only used for lawns, and don't know zones exist. Hell, in their water smart brochures they push to install underground sprinklers as it's more efficient.
Logic has escaped them. When I watered my plants today, it would have actually saved water using the hose directly on them instead of using a bucket. It's not saving anything by requiring that, just say no watering lawns, that's all they need to do. Worse yet is I travel for work and could be gone for over a week, which would likely result in a few more plants lost in this heat since I can't use anything automatic to do it.

You don’t have a lot of friends, huh? Probably none that would consider you one of their “best” friends?
Ever wonder why?

You’re letting logic escape you, too.
If you would have used less water using the hose… just use the house and quit whining about it. The function of the rules is to maintain the spirit of the rules, not the other way around, and the spirit of the rules is to use less water. Using a bucket is inconvenient, so it should lead to less water or people not bothering, but if you’re going to bother and you’d use more water with the bucket, your brain should be telling you that the city would like you to just use the hose.
Your whole situation is fine, though. I get it, you spent a whack of money on new plants. It’s frustrating.
I’m more laughing at the dopes who have been whining about restrictions since day one like they’re some sort of conspiracy and finally get all defiant with “I’m using the HOSE!” like they’re some sort of freedom fighter lol.

Sadly I live near some busybody Karen's who will call me in with the slightest issue, like parking 5cm too close to a yield sign (always nice getting a ticket in front of your house while unloading stuff), watering outside when it's not allowed, sidewalk not cleared from snow 1hr over the bylaw limit, etc. While I get what you are trying to say, I'm trying to balance intent of the restrictions, what the actual restriction says, and these annoying crap neighbors who only care what the restrictions say. The city has not made things easy, if they have an intent, then make the wording of the restrictions match it.

So are we suppose to use some logic (which is what I said) or just blindly follow the rules?
And if we use logic that's fine, but we can't complain about it online? Where's the fun in that! Was it the cursing that pushed it over the line?
PS: Pretty sure we're both 30 something shlubs.

I don't think basing your entire personality around "oppositional defiance" deserves respect

I water the trees in my yard sometimes, the lawn just catches the water that the trees don't get.

I have a huge yard in a city and have also never watered my lawn. It’s lush because I take good care of it. It’s a waste of water.

You sound like you don't live in Calgary. It would be impossible to have a "lush" lawn here without watering it, ever.

Mine still looks pretty good but that's because I've clovered & bee turfed the whole thing. It holds up really great, even in this weather.

I never water my lawn and it usually does quite well until later August and then it might get a little brown in a few spots. Lush might be a bit too much, but put me in the camp that you really should never have to water your lawn.

Maybe I have too much clay underneath mine. I don't sprinkler it often, and usually it's done in conjunction with watering all the other things. But I'd definitely be in full brown town by September if I don't do anything.

"Municipalities provide services to the communities that they serve, providing services such as road maintenance, water and wastewater utilities, waste management, and emergency management."
Calgary council is failing at many of these key and basic line items of their job and it isn't just the current administration to blame - it has been slowly degrading by placing too much emphasis elsewhere for years. The reality is that this could have been catastrophic if a major fire had broken out or something serious happened requiring more water than was available. Was it likely? No, but you can't have a city of this size without proper water service for this length of time.
We learned this through Covid - people get bent when they can't get valuable, and timely updates and if that fails, just a little honesty goes a long way. It's nice pools and spray parks are now finally opening, but when you only get 8-10 hot weeks a year here and this kind of things goes down, it's hard to blame anyone for getting agitated they can't turn on a sprinkler or use a hose as we enter (week 6?) and there is no real end in sight based on anything I've heard - maybe we are just waiting until the Stampede ends to relay more bad news, but either way everyone in the city deserves a lot better on the service level and communication level than it has seen throughout this whole issue.
