“Upcharging in an emergency” isn’t really the same when the emergency is that we need to reduce water consumption and they’re responding by reducing water consumption.

Bottled water costs something everywhere else so I’m not sure why it wouldn’t cost something there.

You still haven’t elaborated your thoughts on this yet despite me asking you. So what do you think about businesses up charging during an emergency?
When the pandemic hit, panic buying started and that included prescription meds. Many common meds were going on allocation to pharmacies so we started limiting fills to 30 days because if I gave 90 day supplies we would have run out. This meant that people had to pay a dispensing fee the same for a month as for 90 days. I was accused by some very long term patients of gouging from an emergency and man it pissed me off.

Why should a business bear all the costs of the water shortage? Why should you get a bottle of water for free?

How will the city pay for this? I'm assuming just raise the price of water on our bills until bill is paid off?

That would be most logical way I think.

I don't think anyone is saying bottled water should be free. Tap water has historically been free at restaurants. And the amount of tap water consumed at restaurants for drinking isn't going to move the needle here.

Man, you sure about that? Every restaurant I’ve ever been to gives you one glass of water as soon as you sit down and you can drink as many as you like. Think of how many people eat at a restaurant on any given day.

If that doesn’t move the needle then waiting for a full load of dishes before you run the dishwasher definitely isn’t lol.

It seems to me a glass of water by request would be the most reasonable option.

Chinese restaurants have always been excellent at conserving water this way

I don't think the drinking water moves the needle at all... people literally need to drink water, whether you're drinking it at a restaurant or drinking it at home is immaterial. What may move the needle is the amount of water used to wash and rinse the glasses afterwards.

It moves a needle when people aren’t even drinking the water and it has to get dumped down the drain.

Anyway, a restaurant not offering free tap water wouldn’t bother me, because if I really wanted it, I’d get some at home. I am not some animal that can’t go without water for a few hours.
You’re welcome to come take a crunch at my house, just know that we only flush with sparkling water so that’ll run you a crisp $20 bill.

You cant even open the doors to the bathrooms at my house unless you 'feed the meter.' God help you if you've had Mexican and don't have change.

I'm pretty sure I've been to restaurants before where tap water wasn't really an option (Double Zero Pizza comes to mind but its been ages so I may be mistaken).

Perhaps, but I think the whole process of having cold water readily available is probably somewhat wasteful (a bunch of carafes that will need washing at some point, a bunch of ice, a bunch of water that goes unconsumed on the table at the end of a meal, extra glasses used, etc). A resto could probably tweak it to figure it out for the present circumstance, but one could argue that's asking a little much for a non-revenue item

It's a temporary thing, and I don't know why you'd need a bunch of carafes. You take a drink order and if someone asks for a glass of water, you fill up a glass with water. Will this take marginally longer than before? Sure, but it's for a few weeks. I dunno, this doesn't seem all that complicated to me.

Exactly. The reasonable course of action is to say 'tap water by request only'

The ####### course of action is to say 'tap water no longer available, but we will sell you a bottled water'.

Drinking water in restaurants doesn’t move the needle at all. People will drink water (hopefully), either at home or at a restaurant. It’s nothing compared to water used for dishwashers, cleanup, etc.

Continue to drink water city folks. It will be ok.

Pretty sure, actually. Our target is 480 MILLION litres of consumption per day.

Per: https://gosnappy.io/blog/how-many-re...ts-in-calgary/

there are 3,757 restaurants in Calgary. Because you don't get a glass of water on the table at McDonald's or fast casual places, we probably need to drop that number to say 2,000. Then let's assume they all do 200 covers per day (which I think is almost certainly high given how small some of these places are). That would be 400,000 diners per day, which given the population seems pretty high for a sit down restaurant meal per day, so I think I'm being conservative on the assumptions here. At 330 mL per glass, that's 0.13 million litres per day, or 0.027% of our lowered target consumption. I guess we could argue about the definition of the word negligible if you want.

And really Fuzz's solution of "tap water on request" probably eliminates essentially all of the wasted water here. Just my opinion, but I think "water that people use to drink" is probably the last thing we should cut from our water consumption, especially given we're at hundreds of litres per person per day in total consumption.

This is bad advice. Do not, my friends, become addicted to water. It will take hold of you, and you will resent its absence.
