I don't think it's a limitation of advanced stats at all...it's more understanding what the stat is telling you.

xGF means that those three players are potentially the teams best at limiting / generating scoring chances for the Canes.

But what xGF% isn't telling you is what that players finishing ability is to actually cash in on those chances.

Play driving doesn't mean play finishing.

I think it's fine to have a vet be the captain for 2 or 3 years. Not every team needs a 19 year old Landeskog appointed to the role or even their best player. Some time a captain is just a guy who's able to hold the others accountable.
