I'm guessing Nenshi gets like 80%+ of the vote and marches his way to a resounding victory, so the little contingent of conservative nutjobs who think they can make a difference is laughable. I can't wait to hear Nenshi in the Legislature. When's the earliest he can get in if he wins leadership? Fall session?

He has to win a seat somewhere so he has to wait for a by-election.

There's a sizeable chunk that would justify his actions because blue even if they consider themselves moderate.

Ya, but we all thought Smith was too obviously stupid, corrupt, inept, and incompetent for Albertans to elect her, and look what they did. Too much risk!

I don't think she has to call a by-election. If you remember when she needed her seat there was a vacancy in Calgary-Elbow (I think) for a long time and the UCP would not call the by-election, then the MLA in Medicine Hat stepped down to give her basically an automatic win in that by-election. Elbow never got theirs seat filled until the actual election.
I think, no matter what, there will not be a by-election until the next full election if Nenshi wins.

I can't remember the specifics of the rule but it is something along the lines of a by-election has to happen within 6 months to fill a seat unless that seat is open within a year of the next scheduled election in which case they don't have to call a by-election for that riding.

Yeah basically this.
If Nenshi doesn't run away with a 5,000+ lead in final voting then the NDP deserve to lose, UCP meddling or not.
I understand it's ranked voting and Ganley might win via UCP stooges all putting Nenshi at the bottom, but that would also mean that a bunch of weirdos also put Ganley as their second choice, even after her meltdown/temper tantrum after Nenshi's announcement. (Stonehouse should have been everyone's second choice btw)

ANDP started the year with only 16000 members. The majority of this was in Edmonton. There was a five fold increase in membership since Nenshi announced his candidacy and now Calgary has almost 40K members in Calgary. It should be more than enough from Calgary alone. 500 votes "shouldn't" really factor in with those ratios. ANDP is also a Calgary dominated party now by membership, Calgary has a 46% ownership of membership.

Know when I knew we were fkd and Smith would win? Remember there was some guy on CP during the election and we had to hold his hand over like hours (or maybe it was days?) to see the UCP's platform was counter to his values and NDP was bang on what he kept saying he wanted? It was like a full-court press of all of us showing him evidence and eventually (and painfully) he came around.
That was fricken depressing. The election was over after that insight into the mind of your average UCP lemming. We can't hold the hand of all of these morons like that. There aren't enough hours in the day to help these monkeys see what they're doing.

That's the reason I didn't want to put Ganley as my second choice, but I ended up putting her as second choice anyways. She is still the second best option for winning more votes in Calgary and hopefully getting the UCP out of office.
If Nenshi loses, that'd be a clear signal that the ANDP don't actually care about doing what's right for this province and are complicit in our continued downward spiral.

Ya, I remember that, too.
It's an uphill battle. That conversation took days and a lot of time/effort from people who took the time to become educated on the issues, just to turn a single vote.
That's how democracy works though. Whoever wins the leadership, they've got three years and as you pointed out -- changing minds is not easy. Best that they get organized and get started soon. Three years will go by quick.

If Nenshi loses that IMO is a sign we need a new centrist party
