He'll be traded at the deadline to a good team, too.

It's a good risk to take rather than settle on a lower number after a bad year or a multiple year contract.

From an Oilers perspective, the player isn't what they need on D, but this is how they build teams up there.
I get the thinking here but who is the last player to successfully do this in Edmonton. Would not be shocked to see Barrie having to settle for a PTO or signing in Russia next season.

I think this is a good signing by the Oilers. They don't really have offensive puck-moving d-men. Even aside from that, they don't really have many good defencemen period. So, a win for them.

Still a lousy team, though. They really better hope that their PP can still be THAT good, because if it isn't, they aren't making the playoffs.

I suspect you would get a Kings ransom for Barrie if that is the case.

Right now, the Oilers are at best the fourth best team in the Pacific. and maybe the 10th best team in the West

They should just admit they're awful and do a proper rebuild. I expect that they're special teams just by default that carried them will take a step back this year. They both read as major outliers.

The Pacific is an interesting division. One elite team in Vegas, three average teams in Calgary, Vancouver and Edmonton who are pretty similar and then 4 terrible teams. Most divisions have at least 2 if not 3 very good teams, but the Pacific is an exception.

Barrie is overrated by a lot of posters, the fact is that the Leafs dumped him after getting shafted on the Kadri trade. No need for any sophisticated analysis, he is a poor player that had no choice and took the best offer.

Staples: 'Oilers won free agency'

Roster...

In - - - - - Out
Turris - - - Athanasiou
Puljujarvi - Sheahan
Barrie - - - Klefbom
Smith - - - Smith

Are ANY of those improvements? Serious question.

SJ had a bad year last year, but they are in the average group, IMO.

Vegas

Calgary

Edmonton
Vancouver
San Jose
Arizona

Anaheim
Los Angeles

Ugh I hope Tre loses his cell phone next year. Would be vintage move.

Unless Gio retires or gets traded, or Seattle takes Tanev, we won't be in the market for Barrie next year.

i see three dice rolls that they are hoping for rebound years and a fourth who was a guy they were trying to walk away from...including one guy they traded 2 second round picks for...

Is it possible they won? sure, but way too early to call it a win because you don't know what they will do.

Ennis was a good signing though, inexpensive and should provide solid results.

I would probably rather have Tanev than Barrie, so I'm ok with this.

Barrie is such an Oiler.

I’d rather have one year of Barrie than 4 years of Tanev at more money. Truthfully I’d rather have neither though.

Exactly why would Oilers want any defense they are allergic to them. Have fun getting lit up again and Connor and his tag team partner putting up 100 plus points to still miss the playoffs.

I think Tanev is much better defensively and fits what the Flames needed more...but I’d rather bet on one year of Barrie at $3.75M than 4 years of Tanev @ $4.5M

For the Oilers though it’s funny because the off-season priority was improving defensively and improving goaltending...and they end up with Barrie, Turris, and Smith. That couldn’t be more opposite of what they needed to achieve.

This is risky for Barrie. A major injury and he will not have another contact.
