Default Jelly Modern Doughnuts

http://jellymoderndoughnuts.com/

Relatively new in Calgary, this establishment boasts locally-sourced and organic ingredients (where possible) and no trans fats. Just bought a box today for the office and most people seemed pretty impressed.

I thought my doughnut, a vanilla dip, was a solid B+. A vanilla dip is what it is and probably doesn't have as high a top end as something exotic like the maple bacon offering. Of course, something like that could either be a huge hit or a giant whiff.

They seem to be following the cupcake model wherein they produce a bunch of comically-large, expensive sweets and sell them until supplies run out. They would do well to add a larger offering of mini (read: normal-sized) doughnuts.

If you have $5 in your wallet and feel like spending most of that on a giant fancy doughnut, do yourself a favor and give them a try.

If you've tried them, what did you think?

I'm guessing that this will take the place of the Cupcake fad?

Dunno....the price alone makes this silly (imo). Doesn't even matter if they're yummy.

Yes, until you've tasted them.

$2.25 for quite a large donut of such high quality doesn't seem too crazy to me. Consider what you pay for a tiny pastry at most coffee shops.

And the main reason why unhealthy food will remain the staple of most North Americans. The pricing on healthier food is just stupid and what causes many to simply eat crap. Because they can afford it.

Bring on the "Whatever, I can get a doughnut for 25 cents" crowd.

Right. But you are missing the point. I posted this in response to my above post. I hate Tim Horton's. I would choose the healthier doughnut over Tim Horton's. I'm saying people won't because they either can't afford it, or don't want to pay for something that is healthier.

You're saying a doughnut from Modern Doughnuts is healthier than one at Tim Hortons? I don't know, man. I've seen them. They're pretty big and they're stuffed with all kinds of icings and fillings.

Canadians actually relish mediocrity. There is a "good enough" culture in Canada that likes to scorn those that seek greater quality.

Why do you think "latte-lifter" is a pejorative term? It symbols those urban elitists who think they're too good for their "timmies".

Trans fats are technically banned from all restaurants in Calgary. You won't find them at the other donut places either.

I would also be a lot more concerned about total calorie content than whether the food is "organic" or not.

Edit: nevermind, apparently that law is not really enforced, so Tim Hortons may contain some low levels of trans fats.

Oh, well as long as they use grain-fed icing and free-range dough...

(I think these things will kill you just as fast as any other doughnuts.)

They claim to be anti trans fat, use organic products and are eco-friendly.

I'd still like to see their nutritional information.

Perhaps, but they will be most likely perceived as healthier with the word organic attached to them. Just sayin'...
