Default Guide to Getting Your Vaccine

Since the vaccine talk thread moves fast, I thought it might be good to have a spot where people can access booking info quickly.

I will do my best to update the OP as more information becomes available/info changes. This is based on what's out there and some of the great info people on this board have provided.

Booking through AHS:
https://www.albertahealthservices.ca...page17295.aspx

Scroll down and click "Book Online." Answer the questions, fill out your information, and you'll be directed to a list of locations and times to select from.

Current eligibility (click the link above for more detailed info):
Spoiler!

Find a pharmacy:
https://www.ab.bluecross.ca/news/cov...nformation.php

This shows you which pharmacies are taking vaccination appointments and which vaccine they are offering.

Some pharmacy booking/registration sites:
Shoppers
Walmart
Costco
Medicine Shoppe
Safeway/Sobeys
Universal Health Centre
Rexall

(there are more to check out, but I'm not aware of all of them. If people post them below I will add them.)

Walk-in locations (AstraZeneca):
- Calgary: Telus Convention Centre, 9 AM - 5 PM *NO LONGER AVAILABLE*
- Edmonton: EXPO Centre, times vary *NO LONGER AVAILABLE*
- Participating Pharmacies (Select Wallk-in Service under Pharmacy Service Type)

General booking tips/information:
- Booking multiple appointments should be avoided but is a good way to ensure your appointment doesn't fall through. Please cancel any bookings you do not need ASAP! Do not forget, as this spot can be filled by someone else much easier if you cancel and helps ensure vaccines don't go to waste.
- Check booking sites often. There are always cancelations (because of above) and more appointments added, so you may have better luck and a faster appointment just by checking regularly.
- (Pharmacy) Some have had better luck phoning or visiting their local pharmacy in person
- Sometimes online eligibility is slow to update. If the government has announced you are eligible, do not be afraid to "lie" to the online system to get your appointment, so long as you are booking for the vaccine you are eligible for, and so long as you are booking for the date you are eligible. This only applies to the short period after greater eligibility is announced.
- (Walk-in) Walk-in spots are capped at a certain number each day. Go early, go to a smaller location, or book online to ensure the best chance of receiving your vaccine.
- Check out Vaccine Hunters for updates on supply, availability, and for additional help in getting your vaccine appointment in booking sites are not working in your favour
- There may be an opportunity to get an appointment sooner by editing your timeslot in the confirmation email (AHS). Details provided in post #14.

General vaccine information:
- The best vaccine you can get is the first one available to you.
- All vaccines available to you are good, they all work, and the only way out of this is for every one of us to get vaccinated as quickly as possible, as we're eligible.

What to expect when you get your vaccine:
- Arrive at your appointment, fill out/confirm your information and eligibility
- Wait times at some locations (TELUS Convention Centre) can be up to an hour, but things move steadily
- After you get your vaccine, you're asked to wait 15 minutes to ensure no adverse reactions
- Some common side effects seem to be a sore arm, headache, and possibly flu-like symptoms which all resolve within 24-48 hours.
- An overwhelming feeling of relief

Please post any information, tips, corrections, or anything else below and I will update as we go!

Five Ways to Reduce Flu Shot Soreness
  1. Avoid tensing your arm muscle during the injection. Try to keep your arm relaxed at your side, in a neutral position. ...
  2. Apply ice or a warm compress after the injection. ...
  3. Stretch. ...
  4. Time it right. ...
  5. Time use of over the counter pain medication, like acetaminophen or ibuprofen.
https://mydoctor.kaiserpermanente.or...reness-1759232

I find these things helpful, particularity moving it around lots after, and relaxing for the injection.

Thanks,

I signed up on the Shopper's website and I will be whatever group is last for the roll out. I have heard of people getting calls at night to come in for leftover vaccines and getting them out of their official Phase.

If you're on twitter or FB, there is an account called Vaccine Hunter that is tweeting out/posting every location they can find, for vaccines, across Canada. They seem to be ON TOP of it all.

A trick I used to bump myself up from an April 28th appointment to April 21...

After you book at Telus, you'll get an e-mail.

At the bottom of the e-mail, there is a link to modify your appointment. Click it.
scroll down and click on EDIT beside your day/time.
it opens a new window that shows the earliest available appointment. hit f5 every few seconds. Eventually, you will find a better slot, click it asap. After you click it, you will have 10 minutes to confirm the time works for you and book it.
If you want to keep looking, click the link in the new e-mail, rinse and repeat.

I ended up moving up about 5 times before finally getting one for tomorrow.

And for those of you who are in BC.

Register yourself below and you'll get notified when it's your turn.

https://www.getvaccinated.gov.bc.ca/s/

Also, if you are 40+ years of age and are comfortable with taking the AstraZeneca vaccine, go to the Rexall website, select BC and you can sign up to a waitlist at a location of your choice to get that shot as well.

Another pharmacy booking link:

https://www.universalhealthcentre.com/appointment/

They are mostly AZ pharmacies. Those who are near there or willing to drive could get AZ tomorrow in Didsbury. Pembrooke location was the earliest AZ in Calgary with appointments on the 23rd.

Might also be useful to share how long one can expect the entire thing to take- with an appt, I was about an hour from entering and exiting the facility- this was the Richmond rd center. Curious to hear others.

You can sign up for a wait list on the Rexall website if you're not technically eligible yet. That way is someone doesn't show up for their appt. and there's no one else to fill it you may get a call. You just have to be able to be there within the hour. Slim chances of this happening, but if you're in a hurry you never know. The link is also where you can book your appointments.

I do mention the potential wait time and the 15 minute wait after. I've heard everything from in and out in 20 and creeping closer to an hour and 30 minutes all told.

Basically, if people are going to a mass vaccination site, expect to wait! Pharmacies are faster.

I used the email edit trick through AHS and got 3 of my friends booked at 820am tomorrow.

There is a bunch of appointments that just opened for tomorrow AM, not sure why. Like a couple hundred, but they're going FAST
