That's good. Bad as this year has gone for Neal, I don't want a 31 year old who's already not especially fast to be coming off a major knee injury heading into year 2 of 5.

With or without Neal on LTIR, we have space for a big acquisition.

Hopefully we can snag Duchene. I think we have a better shot at getting him over Stone.

He'd be an absolute game-changer.
Gaudreau - Monahan - Lindholm
Tkachuk - Backlund - Jankowski
Bennett - Duchene - Neal
Mangiapane - Ryan - Hathaway
(only way the deal starts to make sense is if Frolik goes for cap-considerations).
Bennett and Duchene on the ice together would be amazing.

Hopefully he has enough time to heal both this undisclosed injury and that snake bite that's been nagging at him all season

One of the factors that I think we aren't giving much weight to, is how these stars will feel getting less minutes if acquired. Acquiring Stone for example and keeping him here beyond these playoffs, locks Neal to the 3rd line permanently. He hasn't complained this season but he probably acknowledges that he isn't in a position to given he hasn't produced, but he probably also can see that he's here long term and Frolik, who sits in the second line spot isn't going to be a Flame for long (and Neal probably is betting on himself to be the better player next year than Frolik).
Salary cap considerations aren't the only reasons that teams typically don't have offensive guys in the bottom 6 (there are examples of it, like Kessel, I'm aware).

Not the right thread for it, but I’ll bite... you’d put Backlund ahead of Duchene?

Don’t think it would matter. Top 3 lines would get pretty close to identical 5v5 minutes.

Wrong. Tkachuck bonus overages would cripple the cap situation for next year.

Really happy for Czarnik has been giving more substantial playing time as the replacement for Neal. That kid has worked hard to make the most of this temporary opportunity.
Czarnik has been a bit of a spark plug for the team that has been some what lack luster since the return from all star break.
Guess we will find out very soon if Neal is going to be out long term or not.

Flames currently have a projected $5,766,823 of available deadline room (meaning we could add a player who has an annual cap-hit of $5,766,823 on deadline day and be cap compliant) . The Flames haven't even touched LTIR, which I believe they could retroactively put Stone on if needed.
Tkachuk's bonuses, assuming he maxes them out, eat up another $850,000.
We've got space.

I am happy to be corrected on this, by one of the actual cap experts.
That's not exactly the way it works though, regarding cap space. Pro rated over approximately 1/5 of the season (after deadline) the Flames have 5.8M in cap space. Which essential means they can take on a 5.8M AAV contract.
So they have a little over 1M in cap space, x5. Which is essentially all eaten by Tkachuk potential bonus, which would come off next year instead.
Not sure why people who don't understand the cap make statements as if they do. I won't say those bonuses are crippling, but the would take nearly 1M from. Next year if everything is used this year

You're right. I think if the Flames add $2M cap-hit to their cap spend on deadline day, they'll effectively push themselves into a minor overage for next year, as I think in order to have access to the entire $850K, we'd be maxed out at a net-add of $1.8M, but this is without leveraging LTIR retroactively.
For pure numbers:
To Ottawa: Frolik (4.3)
To Calgary: Duchene (6)
That's an add of 1.7M --> we can fit this in without issue.
I don't think anyone is proposing a big acquisition without sending some cap back, as doing so would force our acquisition into becoming a pure rental, or if there was an extension it would lower Tree's bargaining position this summer as he would NEED to trade players to in order to get back to being cap compliant.

Thanks for this. Kipper's post confused me because it talked about next year (my fault, not his). It makes sense now.
Do we know what Tkachuk's bonuses are?

Also not how LTIR works. It only allows you to exceed the cap while the player is on LTIR. Like the Oilers with Sekera. They were exceeding the cap and had to shed salary for his return.
So yes, if stone doesn't return, and the Flames made deadline deals that otherwise put them over the cap, they could put stone on LTIR and exceed the cap by the value of his salary.

From his rookie season. Each category he hits equals 212,500 in bonuses to a max of 850k

I think Neal has more of a finger on this team and its culture than we give credit. He has been disappointing in the points column, but the players LOVE him and that also means something.

He essentially needs to hit four to max out his 850k bonuses he can get.
I think he has done it already.
