Had to get the 34 in there
Elliotte Friedman @FriedgeHNIC
The exact number is going to be announced shortly, but I believe it will be $11.634.
WOW
Chris Johnston @reporterchris
The Auston Matthews contract will see 93% of the money paid in signing bonuses.

Crazy to give up that much while only buying 1 year of UFA and 93% is reportedly being paid in signing bonus too.
Way to screw it all up Leafs. Is any offer sheet really going to be higher than this value? Tkachuk will want 9 x 5 now for sure.

Right.
Dubas and the Leafs can work the media - I will give them that.

Okay, now they can sign Marner and call it a day. It will be nice if we don't have to hear about the leafs re-signing updates all throughout the off-season.

I am traveling in Europe now. Couldn't get in to calgarypuck for about five minutes and thought that the forum had crashed, because of Treliving signing someone pretty big... LOL

Finding diamonds in the rough like an Eric Staal in free agency or a high performing PTO is going to be key to finding value in the future.

Matthews figures to be a superstar player for the duration of the contract. It's not that bad. If anything, it might stop the Leafs from signing a bad UFA contract. Probably a better use of cap space than signing a Patrick Marleau or James Neal

Just don't see much discount. Even if you add two more years at $15m per year - the cap hit goes to $12.475m - seems worth it to cover two more years.
They are going to have to unload some cap space to get Marner and Kapenen signed let alone fill the rest of the roster so I guess every penny counts.

Does that mean his cap hit will be stupidly low?

It's guaranteed money and not necessarily dependent on how many games you play.
For example, a player is paid $10 million dollars June 1st regardless if there is a lockout that year. If you don't get paid in bonuses, then if there is a lockout, you get paid $0.
Being paid in bonuses does not affect the salary cap though.

1. signing bonuses get paid out in lump sums instead of getting paid like regular salary. Imagine getting your entire year's salary in one lump sum payment.
2. Signing bonuses get paid out regardless of a lockout or work stoppage
3. Signing bonuses get paid in full even if the player gets bought out

Hard to say - he's probably leaving like $36M+ on the table which is a lot to lose if he ends up getting career ending injury. I guess teams are much more reluctant to pay for older UFA years now, so it probably is smart to cash in on a UFA contract spanning ages 26-34 instead of 29-37 since you'd be taking a pretty hefty discount if you want the last years included, while signing a UFA contract at age 26 is probably the best possible timing.
Can't say I like how this sets the stage for the RFA signings this summer...

And it has a 34 in the AAV.
What I learned is that if you're playing in the NHL, make sure you have a high jersey number so you make more money.

From July 1, 2019 through July 1, 2020, Auston Matthews will make $31.1 million
Bob McKenzie @TSNBobMcKenzie
Auston Matthews year by year breakdown:
Year 1: $15.2M SB, $700K salary.
Year 2: $15.2M SB, $700K salary.
Year 3: $9.7M SB, $750K salary.
Year 4: $7.2M SB, $750K salary.
Year 5: $7.2M SB, $750K salary.
That’s $54.5M in SB, $3.65M in salary.

Signed for nearly McDavid money, 2nd highest paid player in the league and entering UFA at 26. With this bonus-riddled payment plan, what exactly did Dubas negotiate on here? Seems like Matthews just gave him a list of wants and Dubas signed it.
Has Dubas been a very good GM so far?

Am I the only one who thinks Matthews is not the best player on his team?

do they both affect the cap in the same way?
