Valimaki skating again
Appears to be the first time he has been skating since the injury

Good to hear. I'd imagine the hope is he's ready by the end of January.

Does Kylington go down once Valimaki is ready?
What's the plan for next year I wonder?
Kylington is waiver eligible while Valimaki is not.
So I assume unless there is trade dealing a defenceman, Valimaki starts the season with the Heat.

I would assume that Valimaki plays out the season in Stockton, or at least comes up only for the POs. While I think he's better than Kylington (who has surprised me a bit TBF) he will need a lot of conditioning.
Next year I think it's camp-dependent.

Kylington is waiver exempt until the start of the 20/21 season or 139 more NHL games played

Valimaki is probably sent down for some games for conditioning. He has missed quite a few games and has not been skating. It will take time to come back up to NHL speed

That’s huge. He was making exceptional decisions with the puck prior to his injury. Personally I think he’s the best of the 3 rookies. If the Flames continue to work towards playoffs, I think he will become quite a rock in the postseason for this team.

very good news, as is the waiver exemption status of Kylington, so that won't be an issue if he needs to get sent down, though i believe he's played well enough to deserve to stay if at all possible

He's probably destined for an AHL conditioning stint, but then I think it's going to be on his shoulders to supplant OK, he won't be given that spot, he'll need to take it.
They've had nearly identical stats in the NHL, but I think Valimaki has looked better and I thought he was really starting to find his game when he got injured. He's quite a bit bigger than OK too, 2" taller and almost 30 lb heavier. So OK could be gone in a few games if Vakimaki is crushing the AHL.

Given that Kylington was benched for a good chunk of last game and appears to be healthy scratched tonight, I wouldn't anticipate Valimaki spending rest of year in Stockton.

Agreed. But I do think that will be his first stop once he is cleared to play. I expect Valimaki to be playing NHL games again by March at the latest.

Just thinking about contracts...
I believe Valamaki has played 22 games this year before the injury (plus sat out a few). Are there any contractual timelines that are affected by him being up or down (I think there is a 41 game limit of some sort, or does it not matter that he's been injured and we've already blown through that)?

It doesn't matter.
For a season to count towards UFA status, it is 40 games on the NHL roster which includes injury. So this season will count as one of his 7 accrued seasons towards UFA.

Thx
Seems kinda harsh though as you can’t send down someone who is injured...

Peters says both Valimaki and Stone could see stints in Stockton
Kristen Anderson @KdotAnderson
Also, as @TSNJFranklin reported, D Juuso Valimaki (high ankle sprain) and D Michael Stone (blood clot) both skated on Wednesday before the team hit the ice. Timetable for a return is not clear but Peters indicated the pair could see a stint in Stockton to get their groove back.
