The Flames are 1st in the conference 13 points up on the last playoff spot after 44 games. Even if they went Oilers level bad for the rest of the season they would still make the playoffs. I do not think it is too early to start talking about playoff expectations or possible first round opponents.
My big worry as a Flames fan this season is a repeat of the early 90s with contending teams going down to heartbreaking first round upsets. I am worried the Flames will go on a late season losing streak to lose the division and get a tough Vegas or San Jose matchup or even if they win the division will end up against Anaheim.

I actually think I am more concerned about a match-up with Dallas than I am with Anaheim.
But honestly, I don't worry much about it. The Flames can beat anyone—especially in a seven game series. They are easily the best team in the Pacific Division, and unlike SJ and VGK the Flames are not just riding a great home-ice record. The key to winning a seven-game series is to win your home games and one game on the road. No one is better poised to do this than the Flames who have a 12-4-4 record at the Saddledome, and a stellar 15-9-0 record on the road.

According to Travis Yost, winning the division and then facing the Ducks would be the best case scenario for the Flames:
https://www.tsn.ca/division-title-of...-run-1.1237409
I guess that's what the stats say, but the article doesn't acknowledge the Honda Centre curse nor the fact that the Ducks are our playoff kryptonite.

Imagine that,
Johnny Gaudreau leading the league in scoring these next four seasons.
Mark Giordano only slightly declining over the course of these next four seasons. Rounding out the top four Noah Hanifin, (signed for 6 more seasons) and TJ Brodie & Travis Hamonic, (both signed for 2 more seasons)
Sean Monahan, Elias Lindholm, and Matthew Tkachuk all continue to produce well over point per game numbers.
I believe we've yet to see the best of James Neal, Mikael Backlund, Derek Ryan, Sam Bennett, and Mark Jankowski still.
The emergence of Juuso Välimäki, Rasmus Andersson, Oliver Kylington, and David Rittich in this year's playoffs.
Taking advantage of our young affordable D core will be key along with continued prospect development of forwards such as Matthew Phillips, Dillon Dubé and others who will eventually slot into the top 9 on their ELC's.

We could win the division. But it is more likely that we end up 2nd or 3rd. In which case we will be playing a first round series against the Sharks or Knights. Both of those series are coin flips.
So enjoy the ride right now people. Because what happens in that series is a coin flip. See: Capitals, Washington.
Winning the cup realistically requires putting yourself in contention multiple times. This is year 1.

Leery about predicting anything at the season midpoint. Having said that...why not the Flames? Why not this year?

I boldly predict that we will make the playoffs!
On a more serious note, I wonder if there is some truth to the saying that "you have to lose before you can learn how to win" in the playoffs. Many up-and-coming teams with limited playoff experience have early exits, regardless of their regular season performance. I hope this isn't the case. Maybe this is where James Neal will show his true value with his experience of going deep in the playoffs, only to feel how much it hurts to fall just short of the ultimate prize.

I'd guess playoffs and second round loss, which is a huge improvement from the last two years

I'm quoting you FireGilbert because I know you're Down Under too.
My standard position after Gulutzan is to hate every Flames coach until they reach the 2nd round of the playoffs, so I still hate Peters. With that said this team has the GF/GA of a contender, an upper echelon contender. A little internal mean reversion in the bottom six and we get even better without a deadline addition, which I'm against (would rather have a young guy surprise in 2yrs from our top picks).
I've legitimately looked at flights from Australia, tickets and accommodation for Tampa in mid June. The only way we play them in the playoffs is if we go all the way. We are going ALL...THE...WAY... to the Finals, then it's a 60/40 roll for the Lightening, but I like those odds. I'll be betting every round for the Flames to win and rolling the winnings into the next bet, so its ZERO or an unbelievable experience.

How do you figure it is “more likely” that the Flames finish #2 or #3? I suppose there is a higher mathematical probability, but the Flames are also the most likely of the three teams to win the Division.

Oh please. I'm the realistic fan type.
And I'm also the type of guy who'd laugh at the stuff the Oilers did as of late.
