I don't think any of the punk bands had what you would call great musicians. The philosophy in the NYC punk scene - whether Ramones or Television - was that it didn't matter. In the UK punk scene you weren't
supposed to know how to play. In Sid Vicious's case, the latter was certainly true:
- Sid Vicious: "Hey Lemmy [Kilmister], guess what! I’m in The Pistols."
- Lemmy: "What do you mean?"
- Sid Vicious: "I’m the bass player in the Pistols. It’s great, innit?"
- Lemmy: "You can’t play bass, Sid."
- Sid Vicious: "Yeah, yeah, I know, but I’m in the f****** Pistols!"
[Steve] Jones: “ When Sid replaced Glenn [Matlock] the music went out the window."
It's interesting to know that Pete Shelley was the co-promoter for the Pistols' first gig in Manchester. Shelley was only 21 at the time. Shelley was a great lyricist and a master of the three-minute pop song. I especially like his solo work like
Homosapien and
Telephone Operator.
