Icon23 'Canes Dip Into Free Agency

Canes In Win Now Mode

The Carolina Hurricanes dipped into Free Agency picking up 2 forwards, 2 defencemen and 2 goaltenders. Five new faces and one very familiar one

Jeff Carter 71ov Re-signs for 3 yrs @ 2.88M

Carter played all 82 games w the Hurricanes last season totalling 14 goals and 23 assists, but more importantly, help lead the hurricanes to their highest regular season standing in franchise history, finishing 1st in the Eastern Conference and 2nd overall in the league standings. One of the GM's favourite utility players, who can play up and down the lineup, play of the power-play and also be counted on to kell the even important short-handed minutes. The 'Canes thought they had lost any chance to sign the veteran forward when the cost of signing the UFA was 6M for 3 years. Once free agency started and Carter expressed interest in finishing what the 'Canes started last season, the two parties quick found a long-term deal that will keep Carter in Carolina and finish out his career

Jake Muzzin 73ov Signs for 3 yrs @ 2.00M

Muzzin signs with the Hurricanes with an opportunity to play big minutes alongside Canes' star defender Noah Hanifin for the upcoming season. The Hurricanes who already have a murders row defenders, Muzzin set a bar that the 'Canes weren't able to walk away from. Signing a sweetheart deal, Jake becomes the highest-rated D-man on the roster and will see top minutes 5-on-5 and also heavy minutes on the PK

Nicklas Backstrom 72ov Signs for 3 yrs @ 2.89M

After losing Jean-Gabriel Pageau to free agency the Hurricanes were desperate to replace JGP''s 35 goals. Backstrom comes into the Hurricane's fold as an emergency safety net. Just in case Robert Thomas isn't able to handle the load as the team's 2nd line center. Backstrom will also carry the majority of his minutes playing the PP and filling the skates of retired Jason Spezza. Backstrom had 61 points last year sharing his time with the Senators and Stars, although he will have less ice time in the upcoming season. Having the playmaking center ready to go when called upon is a huge reason for the signing by the all-in Hurricanes. The Canes expect to take a 2.88M cap hit the following season, but for now, its wins now and is all about going for a championship this year

TJ Brodie 69ov Signs for 3 yrs @ 2.25M

The signing of Brodie just adds even more depth to the 'Canes defensive core. Also opens the door that 2 or 3 of Zdeno Chara, Ian Cole, Marco Scandella or Rasmus Sandin may be traded before the season opens. TJ will play in the 3rd pairing and is more of a cheaper long-term signing for the Hurricanes. This will give the Canes more time as kids like Drysdale and Hughes mature and develop

Craig Anderson 79ov Signs for 3 yrs @ 750k

Anderson was a No. 1 target for the Hurricanes this free agency with the future of Devan Dubnyk in question. Anderson will come in and replace Dubnyk and share duties with Jaroslav Halak as the Hurricanes goaltending tandem. Anderson sign a long-term deal with the Hurricanes that will allow him to leave the game when he chooses, until then he will be counted on backstopping the Hurricanes to their first-ever CPHL championship, then he can walk away from the game as legend Lanny McDonald did so many years ago

Other Notes
Hurricanes also sign goaltender Laurent Brossoit to a 3 yr 750k contract

Way to sign 2 top 6 forwards and 2 top 4 dmen all under 3 mil each. Sneaky good way to build a contender

Free agency is really just a luck of the draw

Being one of the lowest cap teams these past couple of years, I positioned myself to run my team like a small market one... waiting to be a contender before I flipped the switch. So I was very lucky this year to have a lot of buying power to enable me to have as many poles in the water as I could. One of the drawbacks of being able to acquire a player on a decent contract is that 27 other GM's looked past that player for some reason. Sometimes finding a trading partner is difficult.
