Time will tell, could be a value contract as it ages or look like his teammate Zack Kassian.

Long term - mid value contracts always strike me as likely to fail. Crouse is 25 years old - he's not likely to suddenly breakout - best case scenario he stays at his same level but if he declines it becomes one of those contracts you always see sitting our your capfriendly page waiting for it to expire.
Of course - it being Arizona - the salary cap isn't a big concern, but their internal cap could be a concern.

Shot at over 15% last year. Can't see this contract working out well.

Does Arizona care if it ages too poorly, aren't they a team with a window at least 5 years out given their acquisition of draft picks for bad contracts and they kind of need to keep this player to pretend to play? If it ages well, great, if it doesn't trade bait at year 5 trade deadline.
Or am I remembering what they did incorrectly?

Seems to me that 20 goals in 65 games is decent value for 4.3m.

If he can score 20, it’s a good contract

Yeah, that's a little more than I would've paid. There's a lot to like about his game but who knows how he'll age.

I guess the question is does he score 20 goals on a real team that is trying to win? Doubtful he's getting PP time on a team with a real roster.

His value extends nerd stats and numbers imo. Good signing for where the team is at right now.

"Nerd stats" actually liked his season last year, especially defensively.
It's more his production that is the question mark since he shot way above his career average.
I actually think it's not a terrible bet for Arizona.
If he continues to improve and finds his offensive game then $4.3M is going to be good value and you're eating up the prime years of his career.
If he doesn't then he's still okay defensively and plays a physical role. He has some of the skillsets that GMs tend to overpay for in a trade too, so you could likely move him if you needed to. Plus not like they are going to be a cap team anyways.

He was on pace for 25 or so, if he progresses at all he should be in the 30 range.
Contract is a bargain if he can stay healthy.

I don't think he will make this contract look terrible, but I doubt they will look back at it and see it as bargain when it's done.

Hmmmm... I was always of the view that Crouse was... what's the word... ah yes. Bad. Bad at hockey.
I guess I haven't paid any attention to him or his team for a while though, so maybe he's good now? Seems unlikely.

According to JFresh, in the past three years he's zoomed all the way up to average. Good defensively, but can't score except on the rush.

Crouse reminds me a heck of a lot of a young Micheal Ferland.
As CHL just demonstrated, he still has a bit of a bad reputation because of how much he was overrated in his draft year. The "McDavid, Eichel, or Crouse" tweet is still very funny. But we must always remember that overrated does not equal bad ...

He was a 5th overall pick in the OHL Priority Draft, an 11th overall pick in the NHL Draft, and just secured a 5yr/4.3 AAV contract after scoring 20 goals in 65 games. Are you right that Crouse is bad at hockey, or is there a whole bunch of people in hockey operations throughout North America that don't know what they are doing?
