Well that's eaten up half their space and still have to sign Zacha and Krecji.
I wish there was a way to poach Zacha.

$2.5M performance bonus carries forward to the Bruins cap next season if attained?

If the bruins don't have the cap space for the performance bonuses attained, they will be hit a bonus overage penalty next season for the total amount they exceeded the salary cap by bonuses.

How does this work? You can beat the cap by paying a fee, if you're using bonus's to beat the cap?
thanks in advance!

Essentially yes. You can exceed the cap via performance bonuses up to 7.5% I believe. Whatever you went over buy will count against your cap in the following season though.
Bergeron’s bonus is for playing 10 games which he will obviously hit so if they don’t have the space this season for his bonus they will be hit with a 2.5 million dollar cap hit next season.

Ah, so you still get a cap hit, just lets you move money from year to year. There should be a penalty on top of the money moving to, so the next year its not the overage but overage plus a %.
Flames were close to cap hell this year, but Matthews new contract, and Hub for that matter have lots of bonuses.
Any idea what the max amount the flames could shift to next year across all contracts if we wanted to make room this year with Monney and Looch coming off next year?

Basically push the bonuses into next year cap.
If they can't fit the $2.5m into this year, it pushes to next year.
Vancouver has $1.25M in bonus overages on their cap this year - so their salary cap is essentially $1.25M less than everyone else.
Its usually entry level guys who have bonuses but can apply to old guys as well.

Can only shift performance based bonuses. So Huberdeau's bonuses can't be shifted because they are guaranteed to be paid. If Bergerson gets a season ending injury on his first shirt - he doesn't get the $2.5m so no cap hit. Huberdeau gets paid regardless so you have to take the cap hit in that season.

Ah hence why you said it usually works for the younger guys. Older "tried and true" guys want to get paid no matter what and "bonus" for older guys are generally used to help structure their payments different for cap, retirement, taxes, etc- not as incentives.
I was going to say, quick someone call BT and tell him of this one idea that GM's use to beat the cap that the NHL HATES

Only 35+ players can sign incentive-based bonus contracts. It’s a way to keep aging out players motivated and paid like here. Bergeron could probably get 6-8 for 1-3 years somewhere on the open market. But he would have to move and uproot his life. He has great career earnings as is. This way he can get his 5m he easily deserves, play where he wants, and the team (likely) takes the penalty for his sake. I imagine the bonus for Bergeron is an easy target like 65+ games played or something.

Yeah, so called “signing bonuses” are not bonuses at all. They are just up front money each year. They are a hedge against a buyout.

One more kick at the can before the rebuild. It will be interesting to see how they fare with a new head coach, injuries, and other teams in the division improving over the summer. I don't think playoffs are guaranteed.
