Backlund is probably most deserving. He is 100% dedicated to the Flames, he hates the Oilers and plays great against them, he shows up in the playoffs, and he leads by example. All that said, I don't know if he's the best choice or not for taking the team to a higher level.
Captain or not, he's a guy who should have his number in the rafters after he's done.

Who had permanent A's last season? I think it was Tkachuk, Backlund, Tanev, Monahan.
It's between Backlund and Tanev for the C for me and then the single empty slot for an A goes to Huberdeau or Lucic, with a lean to Lucic.
The following season, Lucic probably retires? If he does, Huberdeau becomes an alternate that season.

After signing that contract I think it's pretty likely it'll be Huberdeau. They'll likely do rotating A's for another year and then announce it next season.

I believe in the Jays.

Backlund. 100%
I get the idea that Huberdeau is the face of the franchise now... but he's been a part of the team for 5 seconds and Backlund checks to many boxes.
1: Already part of the leadership group.
2: Plays responsible two-way hockey (leads by example).
3: Has been a part of the franchise for 15 years (Geez that makes me feel old)
4: He does great community work
5: Only two players in the entire history of the franchise have played more games for the Flames (Iggy and Gio).
6: Said that the Oilers "aren't a real NHL team" in an interview.
7: Plays a mean Saxophone.
What's the phrase?... "Always Earned, Never Given"... well he's earned it.

All I can get

Maybe they go with two sets of Alternate Captains (Home and Away). It's always good to weigh it slightly to defensemen, who typically get more ice time.
C: Backlund
A: Huberdeau, Tanev, Andersson, Zadorov

I don't give it to any of the guys with only 2 years remaining on their contract, though all well-deserved. As such, #10 gets my vote.

Lindholm, Huby, or Tanev. I am sorry but I don't see Backlund as a great leader and while he had a good playoffs he only shows up for part of the season. That is not a guy I want as Captain.

No captain again this season is also fine.

No it’s ridiculous. Just name one.
And there is only one. It’s Backlund.
