Quote:
A notable omission from the China group is top prospect Spencer Foo, who had an excellent rookie season with the Stockton Heat before getting a taste of the big show late last year, scoring twice in his first four games a Flame.

"Foo, (Andrew) Mangiapane, (Alan) Quine, (Buddy) Robinson, (Kerby) Rychel, (Matthew) Philips and so on - I've talked to those players and they know there's a method to the madness here," Treliving said.

"They're going to get great exposure. They're going to play in top offensive roles; they're going to play on special teams... We think that's real important for them. In a lot of ways, it's an added bonus with a lot of the regular players gone.

"I think it's a good opportunity for the guys that aren't going to really showcase themselves."

The Flames play two games during their eight-day journey, Sept. 15 and 19, against the Boston Bruins in Shenzhen and Beijing, respectively.

Treliving expects all 25 players to make at least one appearance during the trip.

"The goal was to get a small enough group together to make it manageable, and a big enough group so that you can have solid, competitive practices while you're there."

So I wonder who will be in the Flames lineup Sept 17, 19, 21, 22 back in North America?

Really surprised that Foo isn't part of the roster considering that he's half-Asian and participated in the volunteering and awareness for the trip.

A few notables not going would be:

David Rittich
Spencer Foo
Kerby Rychel
Alan Quine
Andrew Mangiapane
Tyler Graovac
Buddy Robinson

Schneider, Peluso, and Klimchuk are probably the biggest reaches to make the team. I would imagine Dube, Mangiapane, Foo, and even Phillips are more likely - but they probably want to get them more icetime back in North America.

Rittich is clearly not going to China so he can get reps in during games back in Calgary, and as far as goalies go, is probably another indication that he's the leader for the backup role (in addition to his contract and treatment last season).

As far as defencemen though, Prout might be the next Bartkowski. To me, this confirms that Valimaki and Kylington have an uphill battle.

Just speculating here: I wonder if Klimchuk and Peluso are going because they are considered part of that “second tier” of guys pushing for a roster spot at camp. Meaning they are unlikely to make the team to start the season compared to Mangiapane, Foo, or even Dube but, at the same time, Klimchuk and Peluso have a shot at a call-up at some point this season.

If this was the case, they might be having Foo, Mangiapane and Dube competing for the last couple spots on the roster to start the season. And they’ll evaluate them here at home during the camp rather than at practices/games in China. China will be for building chemistry and getting used to the new system. The camp here will be for evaluating the guys that are really knocking on the door.

I thought it was obvious Foo wasn't going when he was announced on the prospect camp roster.

Schneider going as an emergency backup. Will probably not get any ice time.

Klimchuk is certainly far, far closer to the nhl than Phillips. Even though I disagreed with Scorps rating of Klimchuk I do think he’s right up there with Dube, Mangiapane, and Foo as competing for a spot. Klimchuk more likely to be a bottom 6 player than some of those but he’s not a huge reach to make he team IMO. He’d be quite well suited to playing 4th LW and being a penalty killer if we need something like that.

My guess is that Klimchuk is going to China because Mangiapane is coming off of an injury.
In terms of playing styles, I feel that Klimchuk would be a better fit in the Bottom 6, while Magiapane is a better fit for the Top 6 (assuming both improve to NHL caliber).

Rittich I get since even if he's in line for the backup role you might as well leave him here - goalie isn't as important to have over there for chemistry reasons. Might as well get him more game time here.

Klimchuk stands out to me - that to me means he might be in line for that 4th line LW role/13th forward.

Further along in his development so less concern with him playing 4th line minutes / sitting in the press box compared to a Dube or a Mangiapane.

Plus it also gives those guys still here top line ice time against other NHL rosters to see if they can keep up and perform.

I thought Foo would be going at least for marketing purposes. Oh well, I will just see him live here in Calgary
