Lol, oh moon.
Saw this in one of the comments though:

As for Peters' AHL career, his winning % wasn't great, but he graduated eight players who went on to win the Stanley Cup with the Chicago Blackhawks in 2010 or 2013.

That’s a positive.

Otherwise, as someone who knows zilch about Bill Peters, I appreciated the insight from someone who also didn't know much but was willing to put in the effort to find out more.
And Haynes is correct that it's very challenging to determine a (head) coach's impact on a team's record. It's a refreshing change from the armchair coaches and Pierre Maguire's who think coaching is the be all end all.

Well I won’t need to read any more cliches the rest of the year.
a bigger bite of the apple
Take care of your sandbox
Dig in and take another cut
Rubber meets the road
Interesting that at the start, Haynes talks about 10 guys competing for the last 4 or 5 forward spots. I think I see it a little differently. Maybe 2 spots open for about 4 guys? Though I suppose there could be a dark horse.

There are clearly ten top nine forwards (at least by definition), then Czarnik, Lazar and Hathaway with the inside track meaning 12, so yeah probably two spots open to Mangiapane, Foo, Dube, and stretching to Klimchuk?
But a GM isn't going to be handing jobs to anyone past that group of ten, at least publicly.
Good candid article, getting Treliving to talk about the trials and tribulations of a competitive market and not always getting it right.

"The style that we want to play, which is very up-tempo and is the way the league is now, it's very pressure-related and you need four lines," says Treliving. "You can't rely on one or two lines to play 20-some minutes, a third line to play 11 and then three minutes for your fourth line. Those days are gone. The schedule is too taxing, it's too compressed and every game is too important. You just wear people down."
|
That is just music to my ears. After reading this, I gave Treliving high marks in the polls about management. My only issue is it took them this long to come to this vision for the team - speed, offence etc. It's disappointing if they were following a different track and needed the success of Vegas to emulate but as long as they are there now is all that matters.
Quote:
The fourth line can also be a place where young guys cut their teeth in the NHL, although Treliving says to get that opportunity, young players must first establish that they have certain attributes.
"No. 1, physically. Can they physically withstand it? You never want to put in a young player where they might get injured. Are they physically fit and strong enough to compete against men?
"No. 2, can they think it? Can they think the game at the NHL level. You take every other quality and those qualities can be enhanced if you're smart enough. Guys that aren't maybe the fastest players look fast or can play smart because of their hockey sense.
"No. 3, the speed element of the game. You've got to be able to play at an NHL pace and do things at an NHL pace.
"If you can check those three boxes then yeah, you can put a young guy where OK, we can manage him a little bit here. They can be introduced to the league in a lower-line role, but they've got a building base to their game."
|
Also good to read. Hopefully it plays out this way in the season and we get a nice infusion of hungry young guys who are fast and skilled.

I know Haynes most writes for The Athletic now, but here's a Canadian Press article:
Flames score five in third period, come back to beat Avalanche 6-5
CALGARY — The Calgary Flames staged a massive third-period comeback on Thursday, led by captain Mark Giordano.

Not an article, but Darren Haynes will be doing a live Q&A alongside Scott Cruickshank over on The Athletic's site at 1:30 this afternoon. Just posting it here in case anyone has something they'd like to ask them regarding the Flames.
