Embarrassment wasn't an issue when they were pulling Latifi and Sargent out of the wall every weekend...
It depends on a whole bunch of contracts and sponsor stuff that we can never know, but it seems clear that Williams has 3 capable drivers with 2 seats, and RB has 2 capable drivers + Yuki* for 4 seats (*Yuki's fine, but I'd say he's worse than Stroll).
I bet Santander would pay a lot more to see Sainz in a Red Bull than a Williams. Williams is trying to get a lot of money (rumoured $20M) for a full Colapinto buyout. I don't see RB going for that at all...I think it's just a ploy to drive up Sainz price.
Money aside, Sainz makes more sense for RB trying to contend now and Colapinto makes more sense for Williams trying to contend in 3-5 years.
I think both Red Bull and Sainz thought they had better options available over the summer that didn't pan out.
Sainz would be in the same 1-2 year holding pattern with options to jump if a 1A/1B seat opens up...which could be Red Bull if Max leaves. If Merc were in contention I think they'd be the biggest roadblock here, and they may still be out of spite or delusion. But even then, Merc might be better off with Colapinto in their extended family should George leave or Kimi fail.
