With all this retro talk it would be unfair to not acknowledge my incredible wife who bought me the retro bike I've been lusting after for 4 years for my 49th birthday. And probably birthdays 50-60 as well lol. 2023 Z900RS Cafe. After all the Crotch rockets and Italian shop queens the last decade, it feels so good to go back to a nice simple UJM.
Added bonus, this thing is the best wheelie bike I've ever owned. 948cc with Gobs of torque a slipper clutch and a dirt bike riding position..... I really shouldn't be doing that stupid crap anymore at 49.... but ya know.

Any time you get wistful for an old cool car you have, just go by the forums for them and look at how much money, time and frustration everyone is dumping into them 20 years later.
I wish I had a enough money that I could hold onto the old, cool cars and just have a "guy" that made the problems go away and put them back in the garage when he was done.

I love the old cars, but now, with the obscene levels of power now available, they get really boring, really quick. Don't get me wrong an old MX-5 is a neat car to drive, but I drove basically a brand new 1993 last year (16,000 kms on it) and it felt sooooooooooooooooo slow. Slow car fast or whatever the saying was where a cars fun factor wasn't determined by speed, has not aged well.
I've said for years, the sweet spot is 350 HP. 300ish foot pounds. Anyone can have fun there. And there is so many cars you can buy there 30-40k and have years and years of reliability and fun.
Launching a 500 HP makes you queasy. 600 HP hurts your face, and 700+ your in diminishing return territory and one throttle blip away from cars and coffee'ing a bunch of bystanders.
The best bargains are 2015-2017 Mustang GTs. Easily found with a stick in the 30's and will outperform 90% of anything on the road... handling included. Absolutely bullet proof engine too that you can tune to the moon.
My Mustang is 750 something HP, and the car is terrifying to drive. It's actually too much. Don't get me wrong, it's a good terrifying but the ass end of the car will break free at 150+ KPH in 3rd and 4th gear if you get a little to heavy on the gas. And I'm running 315 Pilots on the back.
I don't know if I've ever posted that car on here before. But I supercharged a 2021 GT performance pack manual. It's a pretty wild ride. I'm $75k all in on the car which is ridiculously cheap for a car north of 700 HP.

Yeah, but look at AutoTrader and look at the absolutely nutty prices 2000-03 M5s are selling for now. I paid ~$48k for mine if I remember correctly back in 2007, and now that's about the money you'll need to buy one today.
All it really needed to keep going was brakes (and I'd already bought the new clutch for whenever it was ready to be done), but I ended up switching to a 335i.

There's a saying in my business.... "The most expensive car on the lot is the most inexpensive european car on the lot."
I've lost my shirt on so many 10 year old + BMW's and Benz's I have PTSD from it.
Me: "Oh wow what a beautiful older Land Rover/Benz/BMW. I'm sure that engine light is a $600 fix...."
Service dept: "The engine light is a $13,700 fix."

Congrats! One of the best designed bikes out there. It and the Ducati Scrambler Desert Sled are my end goals to have in the garage.

Yeah, it would be glorious schooling people in that thing. There are so many "mustangs-are-lame" types ("5.Slow") and that thing does not look obnoxious at all, so would totally put them in their place.

How likely you do VANOS, chain guides, and a full suspension refresh between then and now for like $15k+ though?
(I love those cars, knew someone who had an E39 M5 and an E30 M3, both sold right before prices went crazy on them, of course)

That's true, but at least with suspension it's likely you're going with an aftermarket upgrade that isn't anywhere near as expensive as the factory bits that BMW would sell you otherwise. VANOS and chain guides, sure, not cheap.
Frankly, it would still be worth it for that car, it was just such a damned good car at doing everything, it made a fantastic noise, and it was a manual transmission.

I agree. The E39 M5 and B7 RS4 are two of my favourite cars for exactly that reason. Would love to have them both for when the other one is down for maintenance.

Oh it has.
I live in Cochrane and have lined up with a few cars at 12 Mile Coullee Rd. There's a few guys out there with $300k+ cars that had to do the turn off of shame at the Bearspaw gas station.
The only problem is hooking it up. If you run it with traction control on, it almost always bogs out. You run it in track mode, if you hook up, pretty much nothing has a chance. But, if you start to spin, you're just gonna make a bunch of noise and smoke. So it's kinda win-win I guess? lol
My best 0-60 on the lap timer in the car was 3.5 secs. Apparently there's a little more there, but I can't find it and I'm kinda done looking for it. But some guys have pulled 3.3 with the same setup and 11.8 1/4 mile.
The roll on power is the best part anyway. Abusing your powertrain doing dead start launches can get expensive pretty quick so I'm just enjoying it for that now and treating it with respect.

What do you have for measuring your 0-60? A Dragy?
I want to measure mine...have to be under 4, but IDK for sure.

There's lap timers/ 0-60 timers and 1/4 mile timers built right into the car. I think it's part of the performance pack, but might be on all GTs. Timer starts as soon as the real wheels start spinning.
I hear you on AWD, but with all of the cars I have driven over the years, and it's literally thousands, the feel RWD performance cars just can't be beat. The sketchiness and fear they give you is exhilarating.
Best example. I took a GTR on trade a couple years back. It was fast, cool. It handled awesome, cool. But it was so easy to drive it was 'boring fast.' It's kinda like playing Doom on 'I'm too young to die' mode. Fun on the first playthrough, but that's about it.
Everything is so damn fast and so easy to drive now, throwing away a few 10ths of a second and a bit of lateral G's to get your blood pumping is well worth the penalty. Because a car waving its tail all over when you launch, or one that can be throttle steered on a cloverleaf FEELS way faster, even though it isn't.

Oh, I didn't even think it would have a built-in timer. Nice.
Yeah, RWD has its place for sure. Would be sick to be able to disconnect the front somehow so a Mustang could be a year-round car. RWD for shenanigans and AWD when you just want to commute to work or drive to the mountains in the winter. Probably start losing a lot of the value proposition in a Mustang at that point hah.

AWD cars certainly have their place.
My wife has a 2019 Golf R and throws Hakkapeliitta's on it in the winter, and it is frikking awesome. You can drive it like a WRC car, LOL. Hence she doesn't let me drive it anymore in the winter. It's literally the swiss army knife of cars. It does everything, and totally suits her needs. So I totally get the appeal.

You cannot find one negative review for the bike. And the fit/finish is world class. First non-Honda motorcycle I've ever owned that's equal to their quality standards. I'm at the stage with riding where I want something I can just throw my leg over and go for a nice 30 km loop once or twice a week to get it out of my system and not spend 20 minutes leathering up, checking weather, selecting modes, and coming back with a wrecked lower back and cramped up wrists.
You can ride with the cruiser guys and just chill, the sport bike guys and easily keep up, the adventure guys and look way cooler than those dorks lol, and you still don't feel out of place. In fact, I've had more Harley guys complimenting the bike than anyone else. And 1/2 of them think it's a 70's restoration....lol.
I definitely recommend it.
As for Ducati..... just know what your getting into. I'm not making that mistake again. Our season is short enough, having your bike disassembled at the dealer for 3 months of it is a genuine buzzkill and almost ruined riding for me. I only recommend an Italian bike of any kind if you have a backup machine to ride when you are inevitably waiting for a backordered part from June to Sept.

Apparently I can go silly RWD in the wagon but I’ve yet to try it. Would probably end up in the weeds in short order.
