Recognized heroism aside, is Russic OK? This kind of thing would give me PTSD.

From Twitter:
"In all seriousness thanks for all the kind messages and well wishes. Both families are doing very well considering the events. My apologies if you’re in the media and I ignored you. Some of you have wolf-like persistence."

I'd confused Russic with Rubecube's dad bod thread. So the whole time reading the story imagined 'Dad-Bod!' taking on the wolf!

That is the other part of the story. Russic is actually 85 years old.

CNN has now picked up the story.
I think most people think that in crisis situations that they would rise to meet the challenge but in fact they are more likely to freeze or run away. Russic demonstrated his character.

I'd have grabbed my knife as quietly as I could, then slinked down as deep in my sleeping bag as possible. That's, uhm, about it.

Then in the morning totally have been all " oh man, I didn't hear the commotion...slept like a rock or I would've jumped in."

It's hard to know how you would react to shouts of "HELP!!" until you're in that situation. I'm not sure I wouldn't freeze up, personally, though I'd like to imagine I would spring to action...
I'm glad it all worked out for the best and that the people involved are doing fine given the circumstances.
Also hope that the poster doesn't mind having his anonymity removed by the OP.

I would imagine Russic has now made family friends for life with this common bond. The upside he likely always has a place to stay on the Eastern seaboard, downside it’s in New Jersey.

That is incredible. And truly a heroic act.
Also props to the man who was attacked. Throwing himself in front of his family, as you can bet the wolf would have preferred to grab one of the boys. And then after Russic gave the wolf the ol’ boot kick, and grabbed his ire, the man jumps back up beside him so they can tag-team the mutt while his family escapes to safety.
Just a great story all round. And an A++ thread to boot!

“Hey, remember that time I saved your family’s life by beating up a wolf? Yeah? Well, I need to a place to stay again, and I like my morning bagel to be toasted with regular cream cheese, not the ‘light’ stuff you usually have in the fridge. And have some Mr. Pibb in the fridge too”.
