Default Adware / Spyware removal tool suggestions?

I was just curious if there is a scanning and removal program that is recommended? I'm just looking for something I can use from time to time and that won't bog down my computer.

I've used Ad-Aware 2007, but I've found that it is rather slow and heavily.

Thanks for any feedback and/or suggestions!

Another option would be Spybot if you don't like Ad-aware.

I use Ad-Aware and Windows Defender. There seems to be a stigma against the Microsoft tool (Defender), but I've found to be a pretty good alternative to the 3rd party stuff.

I've never had a need for a real-time scanner, so having a program bog my system down wasn't an issue. Just run the scanner once a week and you should be fine.

Use a bunch of different ones, since no single program does it all.

I actually use a combination because I find that Spybot catches stuf ad-aware misses and vice versa but I have started using a program called CCleaner and find that thing catches everything the first time through
