Default Bypassing a firewall via proxy

Does anyone have a proxy that will be able to get around a work firewall? I've tried about a dozen and am pretty sure (though I really have no idea how a work firewall would work) that the firewall "scans" for the word proxy and blocks the site....anyway to work around this?

Thanks CP.

Work Firewall, hmmm, sounds like they don't want you doing something.
If you really need access to something online that work settings aren't
letting you, then I think you should really be talking to your IT dept.

A proxy won't hide your internet viewing habits from the IT dept. What they will see is that you are making continual connections to another server other then the defined proxy/firewall. Eventually, assuming they are competent, they'll just look at what that server is and block the IP. Then you'll get an email from your boss and may find your butt out on the street moments later.

If you have to connect to a work proxy to access the internet normally, chances are entering another proxy IP in won't work. The IT department might be smart enough to filter all traffic through the firewall/proxy server leaving all other external communications closed.

Really, I'd just advise against trying to get around your employers internet filters. Do you really need to risk your job just to read Facebook?

Unfortunately, its very inconsistent...I can still get on to facebook, CP, and a whole bunch of other forums.

But they've blocked gmail. I work for the city...so there's a few thousand employees and our buisness unit is quite unique and probably has the highest internet usage in the city. I guess I do have other ways of getting to my personal emails (phone, etc.) but it is quite a nuisance. Was just wondering if there was a workaround...

Setup gmail to forward a copy to your work email?

Interesting...what would be the easiest way to reply/respond...send through my work account and just have the reply to as my gmail account?

Yeah that would probably work. Though then non-work emails are going through your work account, probably want to restrain from complaining about them through that email

Or if you're using Outlook set it up to POP the mail off of Gmail. That's what I've got at work, my Outlook has like 6 accounts to get all the various emails.

One thing I noticed at my office, go to google, and try going into the "iGoogle" function (http://www.google.ca/ig?hl=en), you can log in there and then see your e-mail

Why would anybody block Gmail?

Because of the chat function?

An number of companies are blocking GMail, Hotmail, Yahoo Mail, etc because people are using those to receive "bad" files. A few people trigger a virus from their online mail account and you bet those sites will be blocked.
