a set of these, hooked up to one of those
bang for the buck wise, i love the sound quality. for the slight difference in sound quality that i noticed, it just wasn't worth it to go with anything more expensive. and the size of the speakers is perfect for my setup

I have a small(ish) living room in my house, with a pretty basic setup. I use...

I've shopped around and I've tried lots of different speakers... these are, by far, the best of the bunch.

Check out the Totem's at A&B sound. I have a pair of rainmakers that are unreal.
They are usually on a bunch of 'editor's choice' lists.
Rainmakers require a 4-ohm stable receiver, but for ~$1,200 you will not find anything that sounds better.

I did actually demo totem rainmakers at a&b. I personally wasn't really impressed. I found them to be a little too bright. I'm not sure what amp they were connected too, but it may have been that, or their half open listening area. As long as you like them though, that's all that matters. Speakers are such a tricky purchase. They may sound less than great in store, but fantastic at home or vice versa. I know my Energy's sounded incredible in store, but sure never been 100% happy with them at home.

Bose 701s for front
Bose 501s for rear
And a Bose VCS10 Centre speaker.
Not to be confused with the smaller Acoustimas speakers, these are full sized speakers. Helps that I used to work in an electronics store and got them all for free by selling Bose and accumulating points.

I have a smaller living room, so i'm running an HK avr247 amp, with Polk Audio RM20FS (can't seem to find any pictures/links of it on the futureshop site anymore, but it was a package that included a sub) and I love how it sounds, especially playing NHL 08 on xbox 360 (hooked up optically through the HK) and being able to hear the fans and stuff in the rear speakers
