Default TiVo Opinions?

My roomate is moving out and has become far too attached to my pvr to go without. He doesn't have the kind of money to throw around on a box from shaw and he doesn't have HD, so he was looking into a TiVo (Dual Tuner DVR TCD649080).

Does anybody around here use one or know of somebody who uses one? He would be set up with shaw. The reviews I read at futureshop.ca were favorable for the most part, but I trust my fellow CP'ers opinions a little more.

lol . . . I'm not sure my roomate is aware computers do things beyond allowing us to play poker and check hockey scores. Something tells me building a computer is slightly out of his (and my) element.

The memory express guys will be able to help you put one together.. Seriously, Tivo was great.....if you rewind to 1997 when a PC was much more, and never mind a TV with a tuner card..

Right now.. a cheap computer can do all that without the monthly fee. All you need to do is a little research on the internet and you save hundreds if not thousands...

I'm pretty sure Tivo charges something like $10 per month. So $200 for a Tivo plus 1 year of programming comes to $320. Shaw's SD PVR is like $300.

you can get tivo in HD and they now support Canada which is a recent development.

I have 2 and have for about 3 years. I pay about 18 per month in fees. It is simply the best way to watch tv. Having said that I don't know that it is much better than the pvr's offered by the cable providers.

It is very easy to program and find shows and it will find shows you may like base on what you have selected. I am a big fan but having said that when I get an hdtv I will likely get a hdpvr for sports and use the tivos for kid shows.

my 2 cents.

TiVo has hd capabilities in the states but not in Canada. Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure that's the way it is currently.

My bad. I assumed you could get it here. I bought both of mine on Ebay and set them up here. I would assume you could do that here with HD as well.

I'm sure somebody can provide the actual reason, but I believe it has something to do with cable cards not being supported in canada yet.

Correct... but, like every other evil technology caveat in the world (iPhone et al), there is a workaround!

...I'd tell you more, but then I'd have to... well... type more.

(I'm kidding, I have no clue what the workaround is, since I don't have an HDTV and have never looked it up - but I do know two people who have done it.)
