Just finished Otherwise by Farley Mowat, my girlfriend has had it sitting on our bookshelf for years so i thought i would give it a try. Easy read but i found myself liking it. Just started reading the original short stories of Sherlock Holmes before Doyle killed him off, so far its quite good.

Just about done re-reading Lloyd Kaufman's All I Need to Know about Filmmaking I Learned from the Toxic Avenger for the first time in 10 years. Such a fun book, though it's really more of an autobiography than a how-to guide.

Started re-reading Red Storm Rising last week, and should be done it in another week. The Letter of Marque by Patrick O'Brian is next in line.

I didn't think the follow up was that bad. Love Lynch, Martin, and Abercrombie.
I have my own fantasy library of close to a 1000 books now, crazy. Right now I am reading Daniel Abraham's The Dragons Path which is book 1 in a trilogy. It fits in the same mold as the before mentioned authors.

It is a good read. Not as good as the first book but still better than most.

Hey, me too. Just finished the first book.

I can't help but thinking as I'm reading it how cool it'd be if one of the cable networks made it into a serial, big-budget show a la Game of Thrones. It deserves better than all the current attempts to put it on screen.

I don't know if it could ever be adequately adapted.. maybe the first book. In a serial show I don't know if there's enough payoff to keep people watching, Game of Thrones or Walking Dead has enough stuff week to week that it keeps it visceral, so they have time to build some depth while keeping people engaged. I don't know if Dune has enough action/drama/etc to keep people engaged while building the depth.

Red Skies simply didn't live up to the precedent Lynch's first book set. I think the central plot really fell down as taking thieves and making them into sailors just didn't flow well.

Much of what made the first book was the interactions between the entire crew. With all dead except for two, the dynamic in the second book was dramatically changed, and couldn't live up. I'm hopeful that the physical introduction of the much talked about Sabetha helps the third book.

Finally finished all the books in the Ender's Game universe. The actual Ender sequels themselves were hard to get through at points and Orson Scott Card really dove into some weird fantasy #### in them near the end, so not sure I could recommend them to any but the most diehard sci-fi fans. But the books focusing on Bean (Shadow series) were awesome, I finished them in less than half the time of the Ender books because I just couldn't put them down

If you read and liked Ender's Game, or if the movie coming out peaks your interest in the book, I suggest to follow that with the Shadow series (starts with Ender's Shadow, ends with Shadow of the Giant), then finish with Ender in Exile (references both Ender's Game and the Shadow series quite a bit). That selection of books is the best of that universe IMO, and you really don't miss anything by not reading Speaker For The Dead or it's sequels

I actually really liked the sequels to Enders Game as well as the side stories about Bean and the others.

I wouldn't say it went off into a weird fantasy realm at all. It was definitely a different kind of sci-fi, but it wasn't fantasy. The Ender series is so much about Ender himself and discovering who he really is, whereas the other books are more about the circumstances the characters find themselves in.

I'm also a fan of the Ender's Game series as well, and I agree the sequels aren't in the fantasy realm, although they are starkly different that the first. The first one is pretty well pure military/dystopian sci-fi where the sequels deal much less with the military and much more with religion, politics, sociology and philosophy.

For those that don't know, Ender's Game started out as a prologue to Speaker for the Dead, but Card got pretty carried away writing and realized it was enough material for it's own book.
