Default Apple launches their SDK! And it's pretty awesome IMO.

I think they've gone about it in the exact right way, the only real downside is apps have to go through the App Store, but given the (apparent) low barrier of entry there it looks very cool.

Anyone else following this with great interest?

A colleague of mine is downloading atm. Says it's over 2Gb.

I was under the impression it would be an extension of the XCode environment. Apparently not.

I think they said during the presentations that the coding would be done in XCode (though apparently not totally necessary, you can develop on the phone itself somehow).

hopefully it work with jailbroken devices, or current apps are offered from App store for free.

I just watched the SDK event from their website (or at least the exciting parts), it looks really cool. I'm glad its for iPod touch too...That's more likely what I'll buy.

One big limitation that came out today, you can't write a multi-threaded app, and you can't write an app that runs in the background. Which sucks for things like an RSS reader, pull email, IM client, alarms, or any other software that you'd want to be running all the time. I can see the reason for it, but it's too bad.
