And there's more:
Bradleys on the move in Kuwait. I suppose they can be moving to one of the several Air Bases. I hope they don't plan to cross into Iraq tonight. That could get really ugly.

I don't believe this is the anticipated Iranian response. These are all small, disorganized attacks from various militias and has been going on for months. Everyone is hypersensitive right now, though.

Would that not need an official declaration of war? that hasn't happened since WW2?

Today, a majority of the Iraqi Parliament voted to sever the security agreement with the USA. I believe this is legally binding because the government needs a resolution from the parliament, and that is exactly what PM Mahdi presented to Parliament The government has no choice but to execute a legislative resolution. Now the gov will implement it.
The Iraqi Parliament also voted to:
a. send a complaint to the UN for the USA targeted assassinations in Iraq;
b. impose on the government to terminate the request of support from the international coalition (all countries); and
c. end presence of ALL foreign forces and to prevent any country from using Iraq against another country.
During his speech to Parliament, PM AdilAbdl Mahdi stated that, prior to the Soleimani assassination, Trump asked Mahdi to mediate with Iran. The Iraqi PM asked to meet with Soleimani in Baghdad to discuss and whether Iran agreed to the mediation. Soleimani was also carrying a letter in response to a Saudi initiative to reduce tensions between Iran and Saudi Arabia. Simply put, this was an ambush of someone coming under a flag of truce.

No idea other than a guess, but maybe that is what is left when one is intercepted by anti missile defences?

Question here...so these were remnants of missiles that Iran fired. Are these just really crappy missiles? They don't really look like they exploded. I always imagined these things getting shred to a million paces when they blow up. These don't even look like they had explosives in them.
|
That's either a Qiam or Fateh missile. The warhead separates from the body in its ballistic stage; the body falls to the ground.

Cool, thanks! That makes sense then. I thought maybe they were just firing blanks or something.

Well if the idea, as has been mentioned, was to not actually kill anyone, and just present a show of force, then maybe? Hell, I dunno, I'm not the one playing Stratego here...

It's been a rough couple of days for the US and A and its forever wars.
The US Embassy in Baghdad was hit by a rocket yesterday. Apparently the cafeteria was hit causing unknown number of casualties. Recall the Iranian ballistic missile attack on the Iraqi air base several weeks ago and the initial US claims of zero casualties. Well, as the media lost interest, the Pentagon released numbers - initially 8, then 11, now something like 34 with many having to be evac to Germany. We shall see what becomes of the casualty count from this latest event at the Embassy.
Now, today we learn that a USAF plane was lost in Afghanistan. Initial media reports stated that a civilian airliner crashed but the Afghan government denied that and it turns out that it was a USAF Bombardier Global 6000 / E-11A "BACN" (Battlefield Airborne Communications Node).
The plane crashed in Taliban-controlled territory and the Taliban claim to have shot it down. This is not confirmed.

The USAF only has four (now three, apparently). The loss is significant. The ground troops depend on radio communication when they direct bombers to their targets. Without the flying relay stations they have no chance to do so in Afghanistan's mountainous terrain. This plane normally flies at an altitude that is unreachable by any MANPADs we think the Taliban hold. If they did, in fact, shoot this plane down, then they have acquired more sophisticated weapons.
Two days ago, the Taliban shot down a Romanian helicopter in Helmand province.
https://twitter.com/user/status/1221052566617886720
That makes a total of four helicopters the coalition forces have lost this month.

Who would have thought the Iranians would supply the Taliban with massively better weaponry through some cut out proxies to make the US's life harder?
Would take a genius to see that one coming.
