Weird that he was cleared to play in Stockton, but not cleared in the NHL. Did he maybe tweak something?

My guess is they will have to activate and make the necessary roster moves before Saturday.

They can probably say today still that he's not ready, needs to get to Calgary, get practice, etc before they activate him.

They may well be operating within the CBA, to the letter, but it doesn’t pass the smell test. Perhaps a loophole that needs closing

They save cap space because he is designated as ‘injured’ while actively playing for their minor league affiliate.

Or maybe they accidentally washed his jersey with Marian Hossa’s detergent

3 points in 3 games on a conditioning stint. The Flames have some solid depth options right now

Looking at conditioning stints, technically they had up to 14 days. It has been around 8 days, so probably have a little leeway before activating him my LTIR. Especially considering it wasn't done until 6EST. There is no one in the NHL office to process things until the morning.

Keeping him on LTIR also helps extend Phillips call-up...and I believe it’s a daily wage, so he’s making a huge Christmas bonus right now

An enormous bonus. Phillips makes $3,943 per day in the NHL, compared to $321 per day in the AHL.

Is it really allowable to have a healthy player on LTIR? Seems dubious to me

Like buying out a player and then re-signing him back on a new contract?

The conditioning stint is still IR because its technically part of getting better. Then there’s a bit of time to get him back in the lineup. Sure it’s stretching the rules, but its not breaking them. That’s kinda the job of a GM.

Out of curiosity, what salary does a player like Valimaki earn during his recovery on LTIR?

I believe Valimaki continues to earn his $832,500 base salary and is paid his $92,500 signing bonus. These count against the cap, but the Flames are able to exceed the cap by these amounts as long as Valimaki is on the LTIR.

Under CBA 15.6, players who were injured during training camp or the off season receive a blended salary of their NHL salary and minor league salary if

a) they played less than 50 games that count towards the pension plan in the preceding season
and
b) are on a 2 way deal

The blended salary is essentially a weighted average calculated as:
NHL salary * NHL days in previous season / number of days in the previous season + minors salary * minor days in previous season / number of days in the previous season

Then the player is paid the blended salary / number of days in current season per day until they are cleared to play.

If someone wants to go back and figure out how long Valimaki was in the NHL vs the AHL last season, you can calculate exactly how much he will get paid per day.
