I remember watching the original Degrassi and he was one of the stronger actors out there. In one of the final story lines he became a heavy drinker and ended up in a drunk driving accident that killed a little girl and crippled or blinded one of the main characters. It was intriuiging deep stuff for a teen show in those days and they handled it very well.
He madetwofinal appearances in the new show where he tried to make ammends after going to jail.
He was solid in the show and probably had the toughest role to play.
He probably didn't want his funeral to become a gong show, but its sad that he did die with very little fan fare or recognition

I'm amazed they were able to keep this under wraps for 5 years. I completely understand if they wanted a private funeral and to mourn away from the public eye. But you think at some point, someone would have mentioned it online and/or to the press, even if just passing "oh yeah, I was last in Ontario for Neil's funeral" or something to that effect.
Not passing judgement on the family at all, I'm just surprised at the amount of time this was kept out of the public.
I thought his character killed Lucy in one of the final story lines, but I think you may be correct (crippled her). Sad to hear... sounds like the family didn't want to be terribly public about the passing.

Crippled and blinded her, I believe. She just wanted chips.
Weird story. The National Post article states that Hope struggled with alcoholism, so perhaps that had something to do with his death and the family's decision to keep it under wraps 'til now.

There was some confusion regarding his passing that they do not wish to go public with, which is why they are only announcing his death now to the public and the media.”
Sounds to me like he went out like David Carradine.

I read that he appeared on Degrassi: The Next Generation, even though he did not retain contact with the remainder of his old crew from Degrassi Junior High. It's strange that it took this long before the media found out about his death, considering he did appear in the new series.
He made two appearances to close the whole Wheels destroys Lucy kills a family and goes to jail and tries to make ammends.
The last time he was in was when Snake had cancer and the prognosis was grim, he despised Wheels at the time but Joey got them all to go out to encourage Snake. At one point Snake states that he hated his cancer and wished he was dead, and Wheels stated that he wished he was dead two.
The last time we saw him he was in a car with a older Joey and Snake and they were doing a horrible rendition of "Everybody wants something"

Years ago some of the cast appeared on a talk show (Jonovision, maybe?) and I seem to recall that none of them had a clue where he was or what he was doing.
Weren't his parents on the show killed by a drunk driver too?
