Right now I'd want Backlund but he's maybe a little too quiet. One thing is, he seems to like taking care of the young players.
In a few years it would probably be Monahan.

You think "a bunch of" players like Monahan, Tkachuk, Bennett and Brodie will be "long gone" after five years?

Who knows? The right trade comes along, 2 of those guys are gone and the return could be our next captain.

That almost never happens though (other than Nashville).

Just curious as to why people believe Monahan is beng groomed for next captaincy. I am not questioning it, but other than wearing an A at a young age, is there more to the story?
He was one of the guys who was scratched for violating team rules. He is a young guy and such things will happen but obviously not something you want your captain doing. Is he now considered a leader in the dressing room? Of course C is often given to the undisputed star of the team, but that position remains contested for the Flames.
And I don't consider this a terrible thread. Perfectly ok to discuss who would be the captain if not Gio. Disrespectful? I had no dea Gio's feelings were so sensitive.

What more to the story should there be?
He was named an assistant captain weeks before his 21st birthday, given to him by a former coach held unto with a new coach. That incident is pretty far in the past now and it didn't seem to affect him holding onto the A under Gulutzen and then being given an increased role with the team since. I would say it's obvious he's considered a leader in the dressing room.. considering he's an assistant captain.
He's young, he wears a letter. I don't know what more story there should be TBH. No disrespect Strange Brew but that's one strange post.
As fans we really have no idea who is a leader in the lockeroom, but one of the few hints we get is which three players wear a letter on their jersey, and Monahan is one of those three guys. Yes he is "now" considered a leader in the dressing room, probably a safe bet dude.

Monahan was captain of Ottawa 67's and when we drafted him was expected to be a leader of our future. To be honest nothing has changed for me, I think he has done a great job and is being groomed for captain after Gio.

Backlund is more vocal than Monahan for sure

They will make him Captain during game 4 of the SCF when they're about to complete the series sweep.

I agree with a couple points already made. One, Gio will be the captain for years to come and any attempt at determining his successor is nothing more than a guess. Two, if I did have to guess, it is easily Monahan. Captain in junior, given an A at a young age, and signed long term.

I guess a better question would be who will be our next head coach? I mean, Gully has like a year left and probably isn't going anywhere for awhile afterwards so it seems now is a good time to discuss his replacement. Thoughts?

I think he's already a young ambassador in the community and within organization. He's very mature for his age and seems like he has a good head on his shoulders. He's always giving back to the community and showing some Calgary pride (visiting the school with Tkachuk and playing floor hockey with the kids, going to the pride walk today) and also things like being on stage with Gio during the 2016 draft alongside Treliving and co.
I'm sure there's more things but I just can't think of them right now

I think that Monahan is the likely next choice with Tkachuk also destined for a letter.
How long until Hamonic gets a letter? I think that he will have one by next year at the latest.

Giordano, Brodie, Hamonic, Stone, Hamilton, and Kulak?
Why, if I didn't know better, I'd think those were the Flames' defenders' jersey numbers!
