As a guy who only owns 3 pairs of pants, I can tell you with some confidence that you need a new pair of Yeezy's. Balenciaga's in a pinch. But don't skimp on that cred.

I'd rank a short sleeve button-up just ahead of a polo, in terms of office wear. But then, even that bit of advice isn't fool-proof, because you could do it right and end up in something like this:
Or... swing and miss:

To each their own I guess. Short sleeve shirt with pants I can get behind. With shorts... Not so much. Obviously all just my personal opinion and preferences.

I think some folks might be missing the part about it being a software company with zero dress code. The guy who owns the company wears shorts to work lol.

This company is the perfect fit for me, because of how little I've historically cared about fashion... It's just that unfortunately, the office is downtown... meaning I'm constantly walking to lunch and seeing all the girls from other offices out in their summer business outfits, and... well... ok, so...
- ankle socks
- no more cargo shorts (dickies? chinos?)
- loafers or "fashion sneakers"?

I dunno, I've been looking at that UNTUCKit store lately and they have some shirts that would look ok with shorts I think.

Cargo shorts to work is definitely not a no-no in all situations. The way I see it, there are two types of cargo shorts. The one where the cargo pockets fit nice and slim to the pants, and the other where the pocket pops out 3 feet and snags on anything you walk by. The former is okay for an office, the latter is not. Again, that depends on your office's dress code too.
It sounds like Fanin80 can wear plaid printed sweat pant cargo shorts to his office if he wanted to.

One other suggestion, go to a store and try some #### on.
Trying clothes on is important, to figure out your style, to get an appreciation for the quality of different types of clothing.
One you get your "style" you can then buy on line, but until then, go to a store.

I hadn't heard of that store before. I tried my hardest to never tuck anything.I like the untucked short sleeve button down shirts. That's what I wear with some nice khakis to a wedding. Weddings are typically in the summer when it's hot and I'd rather feel comfortable than look like a million bucks.
Ties and dress clothes are the most terrible thing ever invented.

Here's the thing.
Most people think that no dress code = dress like s*** everyday because nobody gives a f***. And that's fine if you truly don't care. There are, however, countless ways to look good dressed casually. In fact, wearing a well fitted T shirt with dark slim jeans and fashion sneakers looks a hell of a lot better in my opinion than a black, off the rack $200 suit with Aldo shoes.
I'm glad you're seeking advice

I was at Market Mall a couple of weeks ago and did a quick browse. I didn't have a lot of time but I checked out the website and saw some nice looking shirts.

This 1000x.
The important thing is that whatever you're wearing it looks intentional. Maybe you don't know what that means, and that's cool, lots of ways to find out.
Find a store that does personal shopping and give that a try.
I know a few people who have done it at Simons and really enjoyed the experience. The nice thing there is that it's a free service, and they have a pretty wide range of price points/formality levels. For a workplace with no dress code, it's probably got a lot of things you can wear, be comfortable in, and still look good/put together.
And remember, it always feels better to be the guy who is slightly over dressed than the guy who is slightly under dressed.

How much are you willing to spend and how far do you want to go I guess is another question even though it seems you can afford pretty much anything anyone is suggesting. It also does seem like you're looking into the range of replacing a ton of what you currently own.
Shirts: Try to get something with buttons if possible. Aim for something a bit stream lined and not baggy. You don't have to button it up all the way.
Shorts: Something with belt loops and no more pockets than the typical front and back pockets and probably not jean shorts. Also aim for something made of cotton cloth rather than polyester (ie: Chinos and Golf shorts).
Belts: Nothing that looks worn out and preferably nothing that clanks and squeaks like a tin pail. Leather is generally safe, but there's some cloth ones that are perfectly fine as well.
Socks: Ankle socks. It's also worth considering youth ankle socks which are easier to do below the ankle vs above the ankle.
Shoes: Sneakers are fine, boat shoes are fine, tennis shoes are fine brands that make dress shoes that also make casual shoes are generally ok too. I wouldn't really suggest a shoe that covers your ankle with shorts though.
Places to look:
- $ H&M/Simons: Decent value, varying fit and comfort, decently trendy. Just make sure to grab the semi casual/more formal stuff rather than their athletic stuff.
- $/$$$ Saks on 5th/Nordstrom rack: Full price is expensive, but there's some killer deals to be had on the clearance racks. Generally most of this stuff is closer to semi casual to formal. Fit and value varies on what kind of deal you get because of the varied brands. Also a damn good place for the right type of shoes you're looking for IMO.
- $$ Banana Republic: Decently trendy stuff. Decent value when on sale. Looking at their displays is generally a decent baseline of what you're trying to achieve. I'm not enamored with the quality.
- $$$$ Kit & Ace/Lululemon: Lulu's semi casual stuff is worth looking into and IMO is decent enough that it can pass off in the work place. Kit an Ace in general looks wise will work well in the office for your needs as long as it fits well. These two are of the higher end, but so fricken comfortable and ridiculously durable in comparison to most other brands. It's more expensive, but IMO, I'd highly consider trying it out before eliminating it as an option. Oh and if you need dressier pants for the office, Lulu's ABC pants look good enough to be office acceptable, but are as comfy as lounge pants.
- Ankle socks: Consider looking into the youth socks. I personally think the ballet slipper socks for adults looks really weird. IMO it's a bit easier to buy a smaller sized youth sock that sits on or just below the ankle than an adult sock that does the same thing. Try to find a sock that is stupidly stretchy for the best comfort. I suggest going to winners and see what they have. The Body glove ones for youth is a great one to look at if they have any in stock. The youth cloth ones that aren't stretchy enough work fine, but I find that they sometimes pop off your heel and scrunch in the shoe which is annoying.
EDIT: For the ensemble you're looking at, I think you can probably get away with around $80-200 per ensemble for everything you need to buy. The Lulu/Kit and Ace might roll closer to $300 per ensemble, but there's some serious benefits and durability levels that aren't available in the lower end clothing IMO.

Disagree with everything above except for the Lululemon bit. Their office wear is casual and can look pretty good on a certain person. Everything else, just pay some money, you are an adult.

I find casualish athletic shoes to be best with shorts. Some nice Adidas, Converse, Vans, etc..

Stretch chino shorts are awesome. I suggest a golf brand like Callaway, they are designed to look good and to stretch while playing golf. Tight canvas style shorts are super uncomfortable.
I pair them with a golf shirt on course, but have also done short sleeve button up collared shirts (untucked) with a pair of Lacoste "Marice" style shoe. Not too often though, I feel like a frat boy. Kind of like this
To be honest though, I'm patiently waiting for cargo shorts to come back. I love all the pockets hahahaha
