Happened so quick that I wonder if he thought the two stroke penalty couldnt be any worse than the putt he would have coming back up? Or maybe thought it was only going to be a 1 stroke penalty? Lapse in judgement or has simply given up on the tournament.

Just turned on the TV and missed what Mickelson did. He hit a rolling ball? Daly did that and got killed by the golf media.

^^^^ yep, and Mickelson getting the same from the Fox team. They are the former pros and ones covering the sport for a living, so hard to disagree if that is the reaction they naturally have.

I think Stenson goes low today and/or tomorrow and wins the US Open. I'm not entirely sure why but I really dislike DJ.

I've been bouncing in and out while trying to watch as much as possible but i think i heard Curtis Strange talking about a "conduct unbecoming" charge the PGA can apply? Again i may have misunderstood what was being said.
EDIT: Apparerently he can be DQ'd.
This from ESPN,
Quote:
In an apparent act of frustration, Phil Mickelson chased after his moving ball on the 13th green Saturday at Shinnecock Hills and struck it before it could get farther from the hole.
Doing so is a breach of Rule 14.5 which prohibits a player from hitting a moving ball. It's a two-stroke penalty and in some cases could lead to disqualification. Mickelson, who was celebrating his 48th birthday on Saturday, continued to play on.

They were saying that is an option but didn’t think it was quite bad enough. It seems about right to me. Strange didn’t want to talk about it too much it seemed. I’d imagine they are probably friends.

Game on.
DJ 3 over thru 4 holes and all of a sudden there are a bunch of guys who can become part of the narrative going into Sunday.

Phil saying he hit the moving ball because he thought the 2 stroke penalty was better than dealing with where he believed the ball would end up.

I cant say whether that's the truth or not as only he knows that.
I will say that if it is what he was thinking, then it was a pretty quick and wise decision to use the rules to his benefit. He was facing the whole scenario over again when that ball started down the hill and could have shot even higher than the 10 he carded. That is one nasty green.

It's not cheating if your take the penalty to your benefit. It's just bad course design like the amazing race.

Yeap. I can imagine that with the greens being the way they are, that its possible these players have thought about scenarios like that playing out ahead of time and know that given certain circumstances they might be better off doing what Phil did.

After watching the video and hearing what Mickelson had to say, I think he should be DQ'ed.

Furyk only 5 shots back after finishing his 3rd round. Would love for him to get right in the mix tomorrow.

Don’t really like the US Open being decided based on what time you played the course.

So no golfer, perhaps no athlete, is as good at crafting a public image than Phil Mickelson. But this time, his public persona is wafer thin and plain for all to see. He lost his cool, broke a cardinal rule and did something you don't do in golf. His tournament should be over.
His explanation is a joke and by going this route, he is allowing his beloved reputation to take a hit.

Was there today. Mostly watched holes 10, 12, 14, 15, 16.
This course made the pros look extremely ordinary. Wind definitely picked up around 3:00, but not extraordinary so.
10 is such a great golf hole.
