Looks like a 44% increase if I've selected the correct models:

With value in mind, is it worth it to upgrade my GTX1080?

Are there any games out there that the 1080 can't handle? I have the same card and nothing I've played yet has given me issues on max settings

At 1080p no, at 1440p a few, at 4K definitely.

So I ended up buying this thing on the recommendation of a few friends:

https://www.costco.ca/Alienware-Auro...100510477.html

I have a so-so monitor but plan to pick up a 4K during black friday.

Question is, what game should I play first? Haven't had an up to date rig in over a decade..

The GTX 1080 is a pretty damned good card, and you're going to be spending a grand to make a big jump, or $700 for not much of an improvement.

Unless you're playing anything with real-time raytracing, it's hard to justify at this point. Also keep in mind that the initial game releases with raytracing aren't particularly mind-blowing. Developers still have to get good at implementing it.

Play around with this and you'll see how the various cards stack up to each other over a pretty large sample: https://gpu.userbenchmark.com/Compar...per/3603vs4048

I have two 1080tis and there is no way I'm spending $1,800+ on an RTX 2080ti to replace them.

I wouldn't buy a 4k monitor, buy a 1440p 144hz or 240hz with Gsync or Freesync(make sure its on the approved list for g-sync compatible)

What game to play? what genre do you like the most? Ghost Recon - Breakpoint is coming soon in fact Ubisoft has a sub service called Uplay+ that has a nice selection of games you can check out. Microsoft and Origin(EA) also have sub services but I find the list of games on Uplay the best right now with the exception of Gears of War 5 on Microsoft.

Honestly, is there anything that's going to come out in the next little while at 1080p that even a 1060 couldn't handle at max settings? I've yet to find a AAA game that crashes on ultra on my 480 at 1080p.

Depends. The RTX stuff definitely pushes cards a bit harder, even at 1080p.

For me, I generally play FPS at 1440p/144hz and other stuff at 4K/60hz so the 2070S/2080 is a good sweet spot for that. YMMV however.

That hardware makes the following possible and there are a few experiences that can be done.

https://store.steampowered.com/app/1...rtual_Reality/

https://www.microsoft.com/en-ca/p/sa...%3aoverviewtab

If you don't have Epic game store to get Control, this is available on Steam
https://store.steampowered.com/app/1.../Quake_II_RTX/

EA Frostbite games will run a whole lot better, so Anthem/ME:A/Starwars Battlefront 2 and Battlefield V will have noticeable improvement.

Then there's GTA:V.

Spoiler!

I have a troubleshooting question for PC. My custom rig I've had for a while now has crashed. I get nothing on the monitor and no beeps. I've swapped monitors, swapped out ram, removed video card, reset CMOS and battery, applied new thermal paste and fan. It seems to make normal start up noises. But I've done most items I can think of. Any suggestions?

When mine did the same thing it was the mobo that died.

Yeah, I bought a HP Spectre 360 laptop a little while ago. I may need to get an eGPU so I can play my 15+ year old games

Does it display the Bios boot screen at all when it is booting?(If yes then possibly wrong display settings in OS. Boot to safe mode and try lower display settings)

Are you able to get no ram error? (eg try booting system without ram) if you can't, then motherboard.

It's been awhile since I've had to diagnose a possible bad cpu as that is usually a different set of beeps from the motherboard.

Other thing is while keyboard is connected, when the CAPS lock key is toggled does the caps lock light turn on and off? If not then definitely the motherboard.

Otherwise maybe trying a lower power video card in a different pcie slot might work to determine if there is a dead pcie slot or not. Other thing is improperly inserted video card / loose video card. If it is improperly inserted remove video card inspect connector (the golden conductors that insert into slot) for tarnish or carbon scoring that will indicate shorting.

No Bios, no ram error (indicator light on the motherboard confirmed ok too), no beeps, changed to onboard HDMI, used video card in different slot, tried different video cards in those slots.

I've given up as of this morning. Ordered a Razer Core X eGUP, a laptop cooler and a USB-C hub. A bit more than replacing the mobo and CPU, but I think I'll take a break from custom PCs.

I'll have a ton of PC supplies that I'll want to get rid off, cases, older video cards and PSUs, every cable and PC part imaginable, 16GB ram, monitor arms, etc. I'll assume I'll just post it as free in the buy/sell when I collect them together.

Luddite question:

I just got a Lenovo Vantage and did a speed test on my internet at home. My router was advertised as 600 MBs, but with my Surface 4 (and everything else at home), I was usually getting 250 -300 MBs, and I never broke 400. Suddenly with the Lenovo, I am consistently getting 600+.

Can someone explain what would be different on the Lenovo to give it such a difference in download speed? I would have thought that the download speed was dictated mostly, if not entirely, by the wifi router, not the machine.
